Painting in Latin America, 1550-1820: From Conquest to Independence surveys the diverse styles, subjects, and iconography of painting in Latin America between the 16th and 19th centuries. While European art forms were widely disseminated, copied, and adapted throughout Latin America, colonial painting is not a derivative extension of Europe. The ongoing debate over what to call it--mestizo, hybrid, creole, indo-hispanic, tequitqui--testifies to a fundamental yet unresolved question of identity. Comparing and contrasting the Viceroyalties of New Spain, with its center in modern-day Mexico, and Peru, the authors explore the very different ways the two regions responded to the influence of the Europeans and their art. A wide range of art and artists are considered, some for the first time. Rich with new photography and primary research, this book delivers a wealth of new insight into the history of images and the history of art.

Early Modern Replicas of the Holy House of Loreto
This comprehensive and cross-cultural study examines three-dimensional structural replicas of the Santa Casa, or Holy House of the Virgin Mary, and related circulating visual and textual media. Interdisciplinary in its design, the project engages with a broad spectrum of cultures and lay strata, redirecting early modern studies to prioritize anonymously produced Catholic cult objects and devotional memorabilia, disseminated largely between the fifteenth through early nineteenth centuries. By tracing the formation and evolution of Loretan iconography and cult space in two and three dimensions, this publication illuminates the spread of the popular structure as a sculptural cult object and its worship via replication. By combining art historical questions of materiality and form with broader anthropological and social history concerns regarding information production, dissemination, and reception, this book reveals how early modern Catholics capitalized on cult replicas. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, architectural history, religious history, and early modern studies.
Disaster in the Early Modern World
How did early modern societies think about disasters, such as earthquakes or floods? How did they represent disaster, and how did they intervene to mitigate its destructive effects? This collection showcases the breadth of new work on the period ca. 1300-1750. Covering topics that range from new thinking about risk and securitisation to the protection of dikes from shipworm, and with a geography that extends from Europe to Spanish America, the volume places early modern disaster studies squarely at the intersection of intellectual, cultural and socio-economic history. Around 1542, descendants of the Aztec rulers of Mexico created accounts of the pre-Hispanic history of the city of Tetzcoco, Mexico, one of the imperial capitals of the Aztec Empire.
