The Role of non-coding RNAs in Gastrointestinal Cancers

Gastrointestinal malignancies encompass a large number of tumor types, and collectively are responsible for a significant portion of new cancer cases annually. According to the IARC database, colorectal cancer alone is responsible for approximately 10% of new cases of cancer worldwide annually. There is significant heterogeneity across the various tumor types, with different pathways and factors involved in oncogenesis, as well as varying degrees of prognosis depending on the tumor type. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) contribute to a significant portion of the human transcriptome, and of particular interest are the micro-RNAs (miRNAs), long ncRNAs (lncRNAs), and circular ncRNAs (circRNAs). With the advent of next-generation sequencing and new technologies such a minimally invasive biopsy techniques, there is a growing body of evidence elucidating the role of ncRNAs in the progression of various form of gastrointestinal cancers. Furthermore, in addition to their relevance to cancer progression, these ncRNAs have important potential as biomarkers and prognostic markers for various GI cancers.

lncRNAs in Cancer Metastasis and Therapy Resistance

lncRNAs (long non-coding RNAs) are the relatively longer (more than 200 nucleotides long) subtypes of ncRNAs (non-coding RNAs) i.e the RNAs that do not code for any proteins. However, even without themselves being translated, lncRNAs impact the cellular gene expressions and functions in ways that are just beginning to be explored. The metastasis of human cancers as well as acquired resistance against the administered therapeutics are two major factors responsible for the cancer-associated mortality.

Molecular Markers and Targeted Therapy for Hepatobiliary Tumors, volume I.B

Download the ebooks for this Research Topic: Volume I.A: ¦PDF¦ ¦EPUB Volume I.B: ¦PDF¦ ¦ EPUB Hepatobiliary tumor, mainly including hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer, is a group of highly aggressive malignancies. Hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer have different biological characters, histopathological traits, and treatment strategies, but have similar clinical features such as silent early symptom and extremely poor prognosis. The diagnostic, predictive or prognostic tumor biomarkers of hepatobiliary cancers are in unmet need. In contrast to the poor outcome, the treatment options to hepatobiliary cancers are very limi...
