Whether its ultimate resting-place is deemed to be Fukuyama’s liberal democracy or Baudrillard’s hyperreality, history, according to a number of pundits, has reached the end of the line. In the inflated debates that have ensued, it is precisely history which has been ignored, for the conception of posthistoire is far from new. Here, Lutz Niethammer, Germany’s leading practitioner of ‘history from below’, explores in fascinating detail the forms the conception has taken in the twentieth century and assembles what amounts to an intellectual history of disillusion and resignation. In his survey of thinkers as diverse as Kojeve, Heidegger and Junger, he finds adherents to the idea of the end of history on the Right and Left. Contributing to the recent interest in the immediate postwar period as the key to the later history of the two Germanies, Boehling (history, U. of Maryland-Baltimore County) examines the decisions made by the US Military Government regarding German municipal personnel in selected cities from the first year of occupation, when all city officials were appointed by the Military Government, to the first elections in 1946 and 1948. She finds that the local developments under US occupation facilitated economic recovery in a manner that restricted the implementation of the political and social goals of democratization. How History has changed in the half-century since the 1960s During the last fifty years, the writing of history underwent two massive transformations. First, powered by Marxism and other materialist sociologies, the great social history wave instated the value of social explanation. Then, responding to new theoretical debates, the cultural turn upset many of those freshly earned certainties. Each challenge was profoundly informed by politics, from issues of class, gender, and race to those of identity, empire, and the postcolonial. The resulting controversies brought historians radically changed possibilities, expanding subject matters, unfamiliar approaches, greater openness to theory and other disciplines, a new place in the public culture.
