This work is a comprehensive description of the grammar of Sierra Popoluca, a Mixe-Zoquean language spoken by approximately 28,000 people in Veracruz, Mexico. This detailed description and analysis includes an overview of the language and its family, its typological features and its phonology. The grammar also provides an overview of the word classes, including verbs, nouns, relational nouns/postpositions, adjectives, adverbs, numbers, and formative types. This volume constitutes the first in-depth, systematic study of varieties of headless relative clauses in fifteen languages from five language families, all Mesoamerican languages spoken in Mexico and Guatemala and one Chibchan language spoken in Honduras. Headless relative clauses are clauses that often resemble interrogative clauses or headed relative clauses in their morpho-syntactic shape, but whose meaning brings them close to nominal constructions. For the vast majority of the languages in this volume, many of which are endangered and all of which are understudied, the work presented here represents the only published material on the subject.
This is the very first publication mapping onomatopoeia in the languages of the world. The publication provides a comprehensive, multi-level description of onomatopoeia in the world’s languages. El iquito es un miembro de la familia lingüística záparo, cuyos otros miembros incluyen el andoa, al arabela, y el sápara (también conocido como záparo). El iquito se hablaba antiguamente en una extensa región entre los ríos Tigre y Napo, en el que ahora es el departamento de Loreto, Perú, pero en la actualidad solo lo habla un número reducido de ancianos de comunidades del río Pintuyacu y sus cercanías, cuatro de los cuales. The Routledge Handbook of North American Languages is a one-stop reference for linguists on those topics that come up the most frequently in the study of the languages of North America (including Mexico). This handbook compiles a list of contributors from across many different theories and at different stages of their careers, all of whom are well-known experts in North American languages. The volume comprises two distinct parts: the first surveys some of the phenomena most frequently discussed in the study of North American languages, and the second surveys some of the most frequently discussed language families of North America. The consistent goal of each contribution is to couch the content of the chapter in contemporary theory so that the information is maximally relevant and accessible for a wide range of audiences, including graduate students and young new scholars, and even senior scholars who are looking for a crash course in the topics. Empirically driven chapters provide fundamental knowledge needed to participate in contemporary theoretical discussions of these languages, making this handbook an indispensable resource for linguistics scholars.
As a follow-up study to the global comparison of spatial interrogatives (Studia Typologica 20), the present book examines the spatial declarative counterparts which are provided by the expression class of spatial deictic adverbs. In a functionally motivated typological approach, equivalents of Early Modern English here – hither – hence and there – thither – thence are identified across a sample of 250 languages from all macro-areas. These are also quantitatively assessed to extrapolate areal and global trends of coding patterns. The formal relationships between spatial interrogative and spatial declarative paradigms are analyzed with a focus on the syncretism of categories and of individual cells. Qualitative discussions of patterns precede in-depth treatments of problematic cases and other relevant issues related to the research topic. The quantitative results strongly point to areal linguistic trends concerning the distribution of distinct and non-distinct coding of the three spatial relations Place, Goal, and Source. Additional aspects such as quantitative evaluations of constructional complexity are addressed subsequently.
La riqueza y la complejidad lingüísticas que se dan en el vasto territorio mexicano son de suyo una incitante invitación al análisis y a la historia. Tal es el objetivo final de esta Historia sociolingüística de México: narrar desde varias perspectivas la historia de las lenguas y, en especial, la de los hablantes en México a lo largo de los siglos, tanto en términos de consenso como de conflicto. Múltiples miradas convergen en esta historia en torno a los diversos procesos que han imbricado lenguas y hablantes en el paradójico México pluriétnico. Siguiendo con su objetivo original, en este volumen 4 se busca ampliar el conocimiento de más lenguas y familias lingüísticas que plasman la diversidad de diversidades lingüísticas de nuestro país.
