Men of Money

In this book, sociologist Lynn Hortonexplores how the most dynamic sectors of the global economy—finance and technology—are shaping new forms of elite masculinity. She offers fresh insights into the often overlooked links between economic inequalities and the identity politics of gender and race. Through analysis of the lives and discourse of utra-visible male billionaires, Horton examines how extreme accumulations of wealth are both imbued with gendered celebrity and moral authority and harshly contested. She identifies the ways neoliberalism as an ideological project, advanced by elite-funded networks of think tanks and advocacy groups, draws on such masculinities to amplify and naturalize market-centered assumptions, values, and practices. Gender systems—relational and ranked constructs of masculinity/femininity—permeate neoliberal discourse of markets, the state, and the household. Horton also details the tensions and ties between technocratic elite masculinities which eschew open sexism and discrimination and rightwing populist mobilization of gendered and racialized anti-elite discourse.

Bedford and Bedford Township

Bedford Township, labeled "a most excellent township" by surveyors of the Western Reserve lands, had an abundance of hardwood forests, water for mill sites, and superb farmland. Transportation played a major role in its success when Bedford developed as a stagecoach stop along the trade route between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. When the railroad arrived, the township and the village at the center thrived. Industry giants include McMyler Interstate, the builder of the largest crane in the world, Taylor Chair Company, a chair maker since 1813, and Ben Venue Laboratories, a pioneer in the production of penicillin and pharmaceutical freeze drying. Notable residents include Archibald Willard, the painter of the Spirit of '76, Dr. Theodatus Garlick, a pioneer in plastic surgery and developer of artificial fish propagation, and Elmer Flick, a Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. A bit of luck and hard work from good people have made this area a most excellent township and a good place to call home.

A pacemaker should have saved oil and gas magnate Nathan Moore’s life. Instead, it provided his killer with a seemingly perfect means of execution. A bombing at one of Nathan’s oil rigs days earlier indicates his death could be part of a bigger conspiracy, a web Special Agent Tori Templeton must untangle. But her first order of business is separating the personal from the professional—the victim’s wife, her best friend, is one of the FBI’s prime suspects. Clearing Sally’s name may be the biggest challenge of her career, but Tori finds an unexpected ally in the newest member of the task force, recently reinstated Deputy US Marshal Cole Jeffers. As Tori and Cole dig deeper into Nathan’s personal and business affairs, they uncover more than they bargained for. And the closer they get to finding the real killer—and to each other—the more intent someone is on silencing them for good.
