Some of these include: - a view of how gender is socially constructed in popular culture and in society - racial tensions throughout the decades - educational privileges for elite students - the mundane and the provocative in teacher depictions on television - the view of gender and sexual orientation through a new lens - life in inner-city public schools - the culture of testing and dropping out Every pre-service and classroom teacher should read this book. It is also a valuable text for upper-division undergraduate and graduate level courses in media and education as well.

Pandemic Influenza

Since the 1600s there have been approximately three influenza pandemics a century. Although it is not possible to anticipate their timing, it is feared that the virulent strain of avian flu in south east Asia might mean we are close to another pandemic. As the consequences would be serious, it is important that the Government provides strong leadership. As was noticed in an earlier report (Fighting infection ISBN 010400262X) the United Kingdom is one of the better prepared countries, with a contingency plan dating from 1997. Nevertheless there is still much that can be done and the Committee make a number of recommendations. The report includes a description of the flu virus and previous pandemics; what can be done in the way of prevention and mitigation; damage limitation and long term planning.

Richard Philips Letsinger worked in England, France and Germany as a member of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces (SHAEF) for the last two years of World War II. The majority of his time was spent as an assistant to Brigadier General Archibald Clough in the Map and Survey Section of G-3 Operations. The section was responsible for mapping the plans to invade continental Europe (OVERLORD). As such, Letsinger earned the security classification, BIGOT. This classification was between TOP SECRET and EYES ONLY. He regularly observed General Eisenhower, Field Marshal Tedder, Field Marshall Montgomery, General Smith and many other leaders during the planning of D-Day. These memoirs contain Letsinger's wartime experiences culled from a vivid memory and the journals he maintained throughout his enlistment. In addition, he retained all correspondence from friends and family and has reproduced many of the letters here, giving a balanced picture of what was happening in his life, both home and away.

Authentically Emergent

Are Brian McLaren, Tony Jones, Doug Pagitt, and Rob Bell "yesterday's news," as many evangelicals seem to think? Truth and the New Kind of Christian (2005) tried to provide a balanced assessment of McLaren's and Jones's views. But, they seem to be right about much more that is affecting evangelicals than was realized then. Also, that book misunderstood one of their core claims: everything is interpretation. Moreover, their views have developed over the years, e.g., ethically about colonialism, its influences, and how we should live now. They also have advanced several further claims about the gospel and traditional doctrines. To what extent should Christians embrace their views? Are these th...
