Harmonizing and mainstreaming the measurement of healthy diets
With rapidly changing diets, the burden of disease due to the consumption of unhealthy diets is a worldwide concern. Assessment and monitoring of diets across countries and population groups is critical. However, there are no harmonized metrics for tracking how the healthfulness of diets around the world is evolving. Recognizing the need for consensus and action, and to chart a way forward, FAO, UNICEF, and WHO established the Healthy Diets Monitoring Initiative (HDMI) in 2022. The joint mission of this Initiative was articulated through discussions at a technical expert meeting in Bellagio, Italy, in late 2022. This meeting report includes the discussions and conclusions made on the suitability of existing metrics for assessment and monitoring of healthy diets nationally and globally. It also includes a workplan roadmap for the HDMI for the next two years towards the development of a global guidance on healthy diets metrics.

Indicators for assessing infant and young child feeding practices
This document presents a set of new and updated indicators to assess infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices at household level. It is a follow-up to the 2008 document “Indicators for assessing infant and young child feeding practices – Part I & II”. In total, there are 17 recommended IYCF indicators in the 2021 edition. Seven are new, and four of the 2008 indicators have been excluded from the 2021 list of IYCF indicators. In addition, three indicators of unhealthy food and beverage consumption are included. A guidance note to enhance nutrition sensitivity in Global Environment Facility investments and programming
With the aim of enhancing nutrition sensitivity in Global Environment Facility (GEF) investments and programming, this guidance note is based on a review of 12 purposively selected GEF-6 and GEF-7 projects within the FAO portfolio identified as having the potential to be nutrition-sensitive. Following an agrifood systems approach, the guidance note provides a list of potential opportunities for action that could be considered in GEF project design to ensure nutrition gains are achieved as co-benefits alongside the formally set global environmental benefit (GEB) targets. The note is the result of the collaboration between the Food and Nutrition Division of FAO and the FAO OCB-GEF Coordination Unit.
