The nomadic life story of a polymathic icon of African modernism For more than a half century, Sudanese artist Ibrahim El-Salahi (born 1930) has been at the forefront of African modernism. A renowned artist, writer, critic and teacher, El-Salahi continues to refine his unique modernist vision, which combines and challenges Islamic, African and Western paradigms of modernism in the visual arts. In this engaging memoir, El-Salahi recalls some of the most formative experiences of his career. From Khartoum to London to São Paulo to New York to Doha, and many places in between, El-Salahi shares his wide-ranging intellectual curiosity as he seeks out significant artists and interlocutors on several continents. He introduces the reader to his encounters with figures such as the African American modernists Hale Woodruff, Jacob Lawrence and members of the Spiral Group; the legendary leader of the Nation of Islam, Elijah Muhammad; and the Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo.

Ibrahim El-Salahi (Sudanese, born 1930) is an artist, writer, critic, cultural diplomat and Sudanese TV star, and one of the most important figures of African and Arabic modernism. He pioneered an artistic language that engaged Western formal traditions in dialogue with Sudanese decorative elements and Arabic calligraphy that he has practised since childhood. The resulting body of work brought him international acclaim, and he became a major voice of the pan-African avant-garde in the 1960s, representing Sudan both in domestic government and on the world stage. While serving as Sudan's Undersecretary of Culture in 1975, El-Salahi was imprisoned without trial and endured six months of depriva...

Ibrahim El-Salahi is a pioneer of African and Arab Modernism and one of the most influential figures in Sudanese art today. His works of art draw from a vivid imagination rooted in the traditions of his homeland, which he fuses with inventive forms of calligraphy, abstraction and a profound knowledge of art history. This exhibition is the first solo exhibition of El-Salahi's works in Oxford. It presents early works on paper never before shown, as well as the distinctive multi-panel paintings, such as the lively Flamenco Dancers, 2012. It also features new work, such as meditative drawings that El-Salahi has made on envelopes and medicine packets when suffering from physical pain. The exhibition sets El-Salahi's works into dialogue with specially selected ancient Sudanese objects from the Ashmolean's collection. Examples of pottery, decorated with images of the people, plants and animals of the region, were chosen together with the artist, underlining how, in El-Salahi's words, 'the past is linked with the present'.--Ashmolean website.

Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry

Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry is the definitive series in the field - one of great importance to organic chemists, polymer chemists, and many biological scientists. Because biology and organic chemistry increasingly intersect, the associated nomenclature also is being used more frequently in explanations. Written by established authorities in the field from around the world, this comprehensive review combines descriptive synthetic chemistry and mechanistic insight to yield an understanding of how chemistry drives the preparation and useful properties of heterocyclic compounds. Considered the definitive serial in the field of heterocyclic chemistry Serves as the go-to reference for organic chemists, polymer chemists and many biological scientists Provides the latest comprehensive reviews written by established authorities in the field Combines descriptive synthetic chemistry and mechanistic insight to enhance understanding of how chemistry drives the preparation and useful properties of heterocyclic compounds
