Ibrahim El-Salahi is a pioneer of African and Arab Modernism and one of the most influential figures in Sudanese art today. His works of art draw from a vivid imagination rooted in the traditions of his homeland, which he fuses with inventive forms of calligraphy, abstraction and a profound knowledge of art history. This exhibition is the first solo exhibition of El-Salahi's works in Oxford. It presents early works on paper never before shown, as well as the distinctive multi-panel paintings, such as the lively Flamenco Dancers, 2012. It also features new work, such as meditative drawings that El-Salahi has made on envelopes and medicine packets when suffering from physical pain. The exhibition sets El-Salahi's works into dialogue with specially selected ancient Sudanese objects from the Ashmolean's collection. Examples of pottery, decorated with images of the people, plants and animals of the region, were chosen together with the artist, underlining how, in El-Salahi's words, 'the past is linked with the present'.--Ashmolean website.

The Actual True Story of Ahmed and Zarga

An epic story of a Bedouin family’s survival and legacy amid their changing world in the unforgiving Sahara Desert. Ahmed is a camel herder, as his father was before him and as his young son Abdullahi will be after him. The days of Ahmed and the other families in their nomadic freeg are ruled by the rhythms of changing seasons, the needs of his beloved camel herd, and the rich legends and stories that link his life to centuries of tradition. But Ahmed’s world is threatened—by the French colonizers just beyond the horizon, the urbanization of the modern world, and a drought more deadly than any his people have known. At first, Ahmed attempts to ignore these forces by concentrating on the ancient routines of herding life. But these routines are broken when a precious camel named Zarga goes missing. Saddling his trusted Laamesh, praying at the appointed hours, and singing the songs of his fathers for strength, Ahmed sets off to recover Zarga on a perilous journey that will bring him face to face with the best and the worst of humanity and test every facet of his Bedouin desert survival skills.

Harnessing Microbial Peptides for Drug Discovery

Harnessing Microbial Peptides for Drug Discovery offers a concise introduction for researchers new to antimicrobial peptides. This primer provides essential information to navigate the current scientific literature on bacterial peptide discovery. Chapter 1 surveys foundational background information on microbes’ biosynthetic potentials and two major superfamilies of bioactive peptides: ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) and non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs). Chapter 2 gives a brief history of traditional methods of discovery of bioactive peptides, followed by an in-depth explanation of several current and emerging methods. These current and emerging meth...
