The Advanced Research Workshop on QeD Hard Hadronic Processes was held on 8-13 October 1987 at Hotel on the Cay, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. The underlying theme of the workshop, the first in a series, was an examination, both theoretical and experimental, of the state of understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics. The fourth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held once again at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 67 participants, from 17 different countries. It was a great success, due to the dedication of the inspiring lecturers, the exceptional student body, and, of course, the beautiful setting. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. With the termination of the physics program at PETRA, and with the start of TRISTAN and the SLC and later LEP, an era of e+e- physics has come to an end and a new one begins. The field is changing from a field of few specialists, to becoming one of the mainstream efforts of the high energy community. It seems appropriate at this moment to summarize what has been learned over the past years, in a way most useful to any high energy physicists, in particular to newcomers in the e+e- field. This is the purpose of the book. This book should be used as a reference for future workers in the field of e+e- interactions. It includes the most relevant data, parametrizations, theoretical background, and a chapter on detectors.
This was the most recent in a highly esteemed series of biannual Rochester conferences. 20 invited reviews and about 200 invited contributions on all aspects of current research in high energy and particle physics give a complete and lively account of achievements, activities and goals in the field. Topics discussed include results from proton-antiproton and electron-positron colliders, spectroscopy and decays of heavy flavors, weak mixing and CP violation, non-accelerator particle physics, heavy ion collisions, future accelerators, detector developments, the standard electroweak model and beyond, the status of perturbative QCD, superstrings and unification, new developments in field theory, non-perturbative methods, and cosmology and astrophysics.
The aim of this book is to provide a single reference source for the wealth of geometrical formulae and relationships that have proven useful in the descrip tion of atomic nuclei and nuclear processes. While many of the sections may be useful to students and instructors it is not a text book but rather a reference book for experimentalists and theoreticians working in this field. In addition the authors have avoided critical assessment of the material presented except, of course, by variations in emphasis.
