Wind Turbine Airfoils and Blades

Wind Turbine Airfoils and Blades introduces new ideas in the design of wind turbine airfoils and blades based on functional integral theory and the finite element method, accompanied by results from wind tunnel testing. The authors also discuss the optimization of wind turbine blades as well as results from aerodynamic analysis. This book is suitable for researchers and engineers in aeronautics and can be used as a textbook for graduate students.

In the wind industry, the current trend is towards building larger and larger turbines. This presents additional structural challenges and requires blade materials that are both lighter and stiffer than the ones presently used. This study is aimed to aid the work of designing new wind turbine blades by providing a comparative study of different composite materials. A coupled Finite-Element-Method (FEM) - Blade Element Momentum (BEM) code was used to simulate the aerodynamic forces subjected on the blade. For this study, the finite element study was conducted on the Static Structural Workbench of ANSYS, as for the geometry of the blade it was imported from a previous study prepared by Cornell...

Turbomachine Blade Vibration

Fatigue Failures Of Blades Is One Of The Most Vexing Problems Of Turbomachine Manufacturers, Ever Since The Steam Turbine Became The Main Stay For Power Generating Equipment And Gas Turbines Are Increasingly Used In The Air Transport. The Problem Is Very Complex, Involving The Excitation Due To Aerodynamic Stage Interaction; Damping Due To Material Deformation, Friction At Slip Surfaces And Aerodynamic Damping; Vibration Of An Asymmetric Aerofoil Tapered Along Its Length And Mounted On A Rotating Disc At A Stagger Angle. The Problem Is Also Governed By Heat Transfer Analysis And Thermal Stresses. His Book Deals With A Basic Understanding Of Free Vibratory Behaviour Of Turbine Blades- Free Sta...

Two numerical examples are presented for two-dimensional, compressible, nonviscous flow in centrifugal compressors with backward-curved, logarithmic-spiral blades. The two examples are for different blade angles and are compared with a third example for straight, radial blades. The numerical results are presented in tables of the stream-function distribution and in plots of the streamlines, constant Mach number lines, and constant-pressure-ratio lines. In addition, a simplified analysis for logarithmic-spiral blades is presented that can be used to determine flow conditions within the impeller except near the imperller tip and impeller inlet.
