A Mosque in the Jungle

Years before his political career took off, Othman Wok pioneered the writing of ghost stories and horror fiction in Singapore and Malaysia. Othman Wok left an indelible mark on Singaporean politics and society: signing the Independence of Singapore Agreement 1965, overseeing the construction of Singapore’s first large-scale sporting arena, working to advance the quality of social welfare services, developing the Mosque Building Fund, and being (in the words of PM Lee Hsien Loong) “steadfast and unwavering in believing in a multiracial, multi-religious, meritocratic Singapore”, among many other accomplishments. In addition, he pioneered the writing of ghost stories and horror fiction in...

First Published in 1986. Slavery in Islamic Africa has been a fascinating subject to which many scholars have referred, but of which no detailed monograph has emerged. The better part of the essays in these volumes has its ancestry in a conference held at Princeton University during the Summer of 1977 under the title: “Islamic Africa: Slavery and Related Institutions”. At that international gathering, four principal themes dominated discussion: the servile estate, its genesis and composition; the master-slave connection and the post-servile condition; patterns and perspectives of slave trading; the legacy of Islamic slavery in Africa to contemporary societies.

Political Faultlines in the Middle East

Political Faultlines in the Middle East

The region of the Middle East is beset with a structural crisis of which particular crises confronting the component countries happen to be merely subsets. The real questions revolve round the issue of how long can the present dispensations of power and social structures in the region forged in the twentieth century (first half or second) can last in the twenty-first, when they no longer reflect the realities on the ground. This volume aims to look at some of the issues to see how the faultlines in the region appear in 2020 to both those in the region, and those outside it. The volume limits itself to only Levant and the Gulf and looks at the tensions within and policies (both foreign and domestic) of some of the key regional players which have regional repercussions. It also looks at the policies of some of the global players operating in the region that have bearing on the regional faultlines.
