Analysis and Estimation of Stochastic Mechanical Systems

  • Type: Book
  • -
  • Published: 2014-05-04

  • Publisher: Springer

This book summarizes the developments in stochastic analysis and estimation. It presents novel applications to practical problems in mechanical systems. The main aspects of the course are random vibrations of discrete and continuous systems, analysis of nonlinear and parametric systems, stochastic modelling of fatigue damage, parameter estimation and identification with applications to vehicle road systems and process simulations by means of autoregressive models. The contributions will be of interest to engineers and research workers in industries and universities who want first hand information on present trends and problems in this topical field of engineering dynamics.

Differential Equations - Geometry, Symmetries and Integrability

The Abel Symposium 2008 focused on the modern theory of differential equations and their applications in geometry, mechanics, and mathematical physics. Following the tradition of Monge, Abel and Lie, the scientific program emphasized the role of algebro-geometric methods, which nowadays permeate all mathematical models in natural and engineering sciences. The ideas of invariance and symmetry are of fundamental importance in the geometric approach to differential equations, with a serious impact coming from the area of integrable systems and field theories. This volume consists of original contributions and broad overview lectures of the participants of the Symposium. The papers in this volume present the modern approach to this classical subject.

Formal Groups and Applications

This book is a comprehensive treatment of the theory of formal groups and its numerous applications in several areas of mathematics. The seven chapters of the book present basics and main results of the theory, as well as very important applications in algebraic topology, number theory, and algebraic geometry. Each chapter ends with several pages of historical and bibliographic summary. One prerequisite for reading the book is an introductory graduate algebra course, including certain familiarity with category theory.

Algebra, as we know it today, consists of many different ideas, concepts and results. A reasonable estimate of the number of these different items would be somewhere between 50,000 and 200,000. Many of these have been named and many more could (and perhaps should) have a name or a convenient designation. Even the nonspecialist is likely to encounter most of these, either somewhere in the literature, disguised as a definition or a theorem or to hear about them and feel the need for more information. If this happens, one should be able to find enough information in this Handbook to judge if it is worthwhile to pursue the quest. In addition to the primary information given in the Handbook, ther...

Identification and System Parameter Estimation 1982 covers the proceedings of the Sixth International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Symposium. The book also serves as a tribute to Dr. Naum S. Rajbman. The text covers issues concerning identification and estimation, such as increasing interrelationships between identification/estimation and other aspects of system theory, including control theory, signal processing, experimental design, numerical mathematics, pattern recognition, and information theory. The book also provides coverage regarding the application and problems faced by several engineering and scientific fields that use identification and estimation, such as biological systems, traffic control, geophysics, aeronautics, robotics, economics, and power systems. Researchers from all scientific fields will find this book a great reference material, since it presents topics that concern various disciplines.

Advances in Combinatorial Mathematics

The Second Waterloo Workshop on Computer Algebra was dedicated to the 70th birthday of combinatorics pioneer Georgy Egorychev. This book of formally-refereed papers submitted after that workshop covers topics closely related to Egorychev’s influential works.

Algebraic Groups and Lie Groups with Few Factors

Algebraic groups are treated in this volume from a group theoretical point of view and the obtained results are compared with the analogous issues in the theory of Lie groups. The main body of the text is devoted to a classification of algebraic groups and Lie groups having only few subgroups or few factor groups of different type. In particular, the diversity of the nature of algebraic groups over fields of positive characteristic and over fields of characteristic zero is emphasized. This is revealed by the plethora of three-dimensional unipotent algebraic groups over a perfect field of positive characteristic, as well as, by many concrete examples which cover an area systematically. In the final section, algebraic groups and Lie groups having many closed normal subgroups are determined.

Historically, operator theory and representation theory both originated with the advent of quantum mechanics. The interplay between the subjects has been and still is active in a variety of areas. This volume focuses on representations of the universal enveloping algebra, covariant representations in general, and infinite-dimensional Lie algebras in particular. It also provides new applications of recent results on integrability of finite-dimensional Lie algebras. As a central theme, it is shown that a number of recent developments in operator algebras may be handled in a particularly elegant manner by the use of Lie algebras, extensions, and projective representations. In several cases, this...
