A perennial discussion about teacher development is the optimal content background for teachers. In recent years, that discussion has taken center stage in the work of mathematics education researchers, mathematicians, mathematics professional developers, and mathematics education policymakers. Much of the existing and prior work in this area has been directed toward mathematical knowledge for teaching at the elementary level. The work described in this volume takes a sometimes-neglected approach, focusing on the dynamic nature of mathematical understanding rather than on a stable description of mathematical knowledge, and on mathematics for secondary teaching rather than mathematics for tea...

This topical survey provides an overview of the current state of the art in technology use in mathematics education, including both practice-oriented experiences and research-based evidence, as seen from an international perspective. Three core themes are discussed: Evidence of effectiveness; Digital assessment; and Communication and collaboration. The survey’s final section offers suggestions for future trends in technology-rich mathematics education and provides a research agenda reflecting those trends. Predicting what lower secondary mathematics education might look like in 2025 with respect to the role of digital tools in curricula, teaching and learning, it examines the question of how teachers can integrate physical and virtual experiences to promote a deeper understanding of mathematics. The issues and findings presented here provide an overview of current research and offer a glimpse into a potential future characterized by the effective integration of technology to support mathematics teaching and learning at the lower secondary level.

According to NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School mathematics, "Technology is essential in teaching and learning of mathematics; it influences the mathematics that is taught and it enhances students’ learning.” How does research inform this clarion call for technology in mathematics teaching and learning? In response to the need to craft appropriate roles for technology in school mathematics new technological approaches have been applied to the teaching and learning of mathematics, and these approaches have been examined by researchers world-wide. The first volume provides insight into what research suggests about the nature of mathematics learning in technological environments. ...

The depth and breadth of a mathematics teacher’s understanding of mathematics matter most as the teacher engages in the daily work of teaching. One of the major challenges to teachers is to be ready to draw on the relevant mathematical ideas from different areas of the school curriculum and from their postsecondary mathematics experiences that can be helpful in explaining ideas to students, making instructional decisions, creating examples, and engaging in other aspects of their daily work. Being mathematically ready and confident requires teachers to engage in ongoing professional learning that helps them to connect mathematics to events like those they live on a daily basis. The purpose ...

Algebra in a Technological World

The purpose of this series is to provide instructional ideas and materials that support implementation of the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards in local settings. This book addresses in a very practical way the content, pedagogy, and pupil assessment dimensions of reshaping school mathematics. Chapters include discussions and activities that project the future of algebra in classrooms where today's learning tools, such as graphing calculators with table-building, graphing, and function-fitting capabilities, are augmented with the capability of performing symbolic manipulations. Chapter titles are: (1) "The Future of Algebra in a Technological World"; (2) "Changes in Learning and Their Consequences for Teaching and Assessing"; (3) "A Functions Approach to Algebra"; (4)"Extending a Functions Approach"; (5) "Matrics"; and (6) Symbolic Reasoning." An appendix contains activity solutions. (Contains 25 references and a 22 citation annotated technology resource list.) (MKR)

This volume contains the proceedings of the First International Curriculum Conference sponsored by the Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum (CSMC). The CSMC is one of the National Science Foundation Centers for Learning and Teaching (Award No. ESI-0333879). The countries—China, Japan, Korea, and Singapore (in alphabetical order, which also happens to be the order of their populations)—have each been in the news because of their performance on international testsand/or their economic performance and potential. They also have centralized education ministries that create a single mathematics curriculum framework followed in the entire country. In all these countries, curricula are...
