New Approaches and Concepts in Turbulence

  • Type: Book

  • Published: 2012-12-06

  • Publisher: Birkhäuser

This book contains the proceedings of a colloquium held in Monte Verit from September 9-13, 1991. Special care has been taken to devote adequate space to the scientific discussions, which claimed about half of the time available. Scientists from all over the world presented their views on the importance of kinematic properties, topology and fractal geometry, and on the dynamic behaviour of turbulent flows. They debated the importance of coherent structures and the possibility to incorporate these in the statistical theory of turbulence, as well as their significance for the reduction of the degrees of freedom and the prospective of dynamical systems and chaos approaches to the problem of turbulence. Also under discussion was the relevance of these new approaches to the study of the instability and the origin of turbulence, and the importance of numerical and physical experiments in improving the understanding of turbulence.

Transition, Turbulence and Combustion Modelling

This single-volume work gives an introduction to the fields of transition, turbulence, and combustion modeling of compressible flows and provides the physical background for today’s modeling approaches in these fields. It presents basic equations and discusses fundamental aspects of hydrodynamical instability.

This book provides a survey of the frontiers of research in the numerical modeling and mathematical analysis used in the study of the atmosphere and oceans. The details of the current practices in global atmospheric and ocean models, the assimilation of observational data into such models and the numerical techniques used in theoretical analysis of the atmosphere and ocean are among the topics covered.• Truly interdisciplinary: scientific interactions between specialties of atmospheric and ocean sciences and applied and computational mathematics • Uses the approach of computational mathematicians, applied and numerical analysts and the tools appropriate for unsolved problems in the atmospheric and oceanic sciences• Contributions uniquely address central problems and provide a survey of the frontier of research

These proceedings contain the papers presented at the 4th International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements held at Ajaccio, Corsica, France from 24-26 May 1999. It follows three previous conferences on the topic of engineering turbulence modelling and measurements. The purpose of this series of symposia is to provide a forum for presenting and discussing new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. Turbulence is still one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. As powerful computers and accurate numerical methods are now available for solving the flow equations, an...

Advances in Turbulence IV

The European Turbulence Conferences have been organized under the auspices of the European Mechanics Committee (Euromech) to provide a forum for discussion and exchange of recent and new results in the field of turbulence. The first conference was organized in Lyon in 1986 with 152 participants. The second and third conferences were held in Berlin (1988) and Stockholm (1990) with 165 and 172 participants respectively. The fourth was organized in Delft from 30 June to 3 July 1992 by the J.M. Burgers Centre. There were 214 participants from 22 countries. This steadily growing number of participants demonstrates both the success and need for this type of conference. The main topics of the Fourt...

Nonlinear Processes in Physics

In 1979, a historical meeting took place at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kiev, USSR, where 48 American Scientists, specialists in nonlinear and turbulent processes, met for two weeks with their soviet counterparts. This meeting pro vided the unique opportunity for USA and USSR participants to directly interact personally and scientifically with each other. This interaction was of great impor not only for the individuals involved but also for the science of nonlinear tance phenomena in general. At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that this exchange should continue, and it was decided to have the next meeting in the USA in 1981. Unfortunately, due to the political situation at...

Statistical Theories and Computational Approaches to Turbulence

This volume contains the papers presented at the workshop on Statistical The ories and Computational Approaches to Turbulence: Modern Perspectives and Applications to Global-Scale Flows, held October 10-13, 2001, at Nagoya Uni versity, Nagoya, Japan. Because of recent developments in computational capabilities, the compu tational approach is showing the potential to resolve a much wider range of length and time scales in turbulent physical systems. Nevertheless, even with the largest supercomputers of the foreseeable future, development of adequate modeling techniques for at least some scales of motion will be necessary for practical computations of important problems such as weather forecas...
