The Chemistry of the Hydrazo, Azo and Azoxy Groups, Volume 2
The first volume of The Chemistry of the Hydrazo, Azo and Azoxy Groups was published in 1975 in two parts, and the present book is the second volume of this publication. Since 1975 three supplementary volumes dealing with the chemistry of double-bonded functional groups were also published in the Series and these volumes contain much material on the chemistry of azoxy compounds. Several subjects were omitted from the original volume in 1975. These omissions have been corrected in the present volume, which contains chapters on "Detection, identification and determination," on NMR, on ESR, on PES, on pharmacology and toxicology, and also on safety and environmental factors.

The Rumen and Its Microbes
The Rumen and Its Microbes is a contribution to the ecology of this important microbial habitat. Relatively few microbial habitats have been subjected to a thorough quantitative ecological analysis. The rumen fermentation is peculiarly suitable because of its relatively constant and continuous nature and because of the very rapid rates of conversion of organic matter. Although analysis of the ruminant-microbe symbiosis is still far from complete, knowledge is sufficient for formulation of principles and for identification and measurement of important parameters. The first eight chapters of the book include a description of the rumen and its microbes, their activities, and the extent of these activities. This basic biology provides a framework in which applications to agriculture can be evaluated. These applications are discussed in the last four chapters: host metabolism, variation in the rumen, possible practical applications, and abnormalities in rumen function.
Anti-AIDS Drug Development
Curative anti-AIDS drug therapy still remains as an unconquered hurdle to drug research. This book covers significant aspects that are involved in the search, design and development of potential anti-AIDS agents with emphasis on areas related to drug development. These include enzyme inhibitors (reverse transcriptase, protease, glucosidase), inhibitors of gene expression (oligonucleotides), viral-binding inhibitors (anionic compounds and CD4 mimetics) and various plant derived products. A focus of this book is the medicinal chemistry of these classes of compounds. In addition, other areas that are pertinent to drug development are also addressed. These include HIV regulatory proteins, the development of anti-HIV-1 assays and resistance to anti-HIV-1 agents.
