Models of Phase Transitions

... "What do you call work?" "Why ain't that work?" Tom resumed his whitewashing, and answered carelessly: "Well. lI1a), he it is, and maybe it aill't. All I know, is, it suits Tom Sawvc/:" "Oil CO/lll!, IIOW, Will do not mean to let 011 that you like it?" The brush continued to move. "Likc it? Well, I do not see wlzy I oughtn't to like it. Does a hoy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?" That put the thing ill a Ilew light. Ben stopped nibhling the apple ... (From Mark Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Chapter II.) Mathematics can put quantitative phenomena in a new light; in turn applications may provide a vivid support for mathematical concepts. This volume illustrates some aspect...

Handbook of Measure Theory

  • Type: Book
  • -
  • Published: 2002-10-31

  • Publisher: Elsevier

The main goal of this Handbook isto survey measure theory with its many different branches and itsrelations with other areas of mathematics. Mostly aggregating many classical branches of measure theory the aim of the Handbook is also to cover new fields, approaches and applications whichsupport the idea of "measure" in a wider sense, e.g. the ninth part of the Handbook. Although chapters are written of surveys in the variousareas they contain many special topics and challengingproblems valuable for experts and rich sources of inspiration.Mathematicians from other areas as well as physicists, computerscientists, engineers and econometrists will find useful results andpowerful methods for their research. The reader may find in theHandbook many close relations to other mathematical areas: realanalysis, probability theory, statistics, ergodic theory, functional analysis, potential theory, topology, set theory, geometry, differential equations, optimization, variationalanalysis, decision making and others. The Handbook is a richsource of relevant references to articles, books and lecturenotes and it contains for the reader's convenience an extensivesubject and author index.

Applied Nonlinear Functional Analysis

The second edition covers the introduction to the main mathematical tools of nonlinear functional analysis, which are also used in the study of concrete problems in economics, engineering, and physics. The new edition includes some new topics on Banach spaces of functions and measures and nonlinear analysis.

Differential Inclusions in Nonsmooth Mechanical Problems

  • Type: Book
  • -
  • Published: 2013-11-11

  • Publisher: Birkhäuser

The book is devoted to evolution problems which arise in the dynamics of mechanical systems involving unilateral constraints, possibly in the presence of dry friction. Collisions may be the result. In such a context, the velocity function cannot be expected to be absolutely continuous, so the traditional theory of differential equations or inclusions does not apply. Some effective numerical techniques have been proposed, but existence results were missing until now. This book starts filling that gap. At first, some typical mathematical tools are introduced, such as compactness results in the space of vector functions of bounded variation in time and approximation in the sense of graphs. The sweeping process by a moving convex set in a Hilbert space plays a central role. The latest existence results concerning this process are presented in chapter 2. In chapters 3 and 4, the study of the mechanical problems is undertaken. Connected areas of research are briefly reviewed in chapter 5. Proofs are constructive whenever possible and convergence of algorithms is often considered. The book presupposes only a moderate background in functional analysis.

Positive Operators, Riesz Spaces, and Economics

Over the last fifty years advanced mathematical tools have become an integral part in the development of modern economic theory. Economists continue to invoke sophisticated mathematical techniques and ideas in order to understand complex economic and social problems. In the last ten years the theory of Riesz spaces (vector lattices) has been successfully applied to economic theory. By now it is understood relatively well that the lattice structure of Riesz spaces can be employed to capture and interpret several economic notions. On April 16-20, 1990, a small conference on Riesz Spaces, Positive Opera tors, and their Applications to Economics took place at the California Institute of Technolo...

Stochastic Analysis and Related Topics VI

This volume contains the contributions of the participants of the Sixth Oslo-Silivri Workshop on Stochastic Analysis, held in Geilo from July 29 to August 6, 1996. There are two main lectures " Stochastic Differential Equations with Memory, by S.E.A. Mohammed, " Backward SDE's and Viscosity Solutions of Second Order Semilinear PDE's, by E. Pardoux. The main lectures are presented at the beginning of the volume. There is also a review paper at the third place about the stochastic calculus of variations on Lie groups. The contributing papers vary from SPDEs to Non-Kolmogorov type probabilistic models. We would like to thank " VISTA, a research cooperation between Norwegian Academy of Sciences ...

Fractals in Graz 2001

This book contains the proceedings of the conference "Fractals in Graz 2001 - Analysis, Dynamics, Geometry, Stochastics" that was held in the second week of June 2001 at Graz University of Technology, in the capital of Styria, southeastern province of Austria. The scientific committee of the meeting consisted of M. Barlow (Vancouver), R. Strichartz (Ithaca), P. Grabner and W. Woess (both Graz), the latter two being the local organizers and editors of this volume. We made an effort to unite in the conference as well as in the present pro ceedings a multitude of different directions of active current work, and to bring together researchers from various countries as well as research fields that...
