In Images of China in Polish and Serbian Travel Writings (1720-1949), Tomasz Ewertowski examines how Polish and Serbian travelers described China, surveys various factors which influenced their style of writing, and illustrates the social, political and intellectual context that determined their different representations of the Middle Kingdom. The corpus includes a vast array of texts written by more than 80 authors who traveled to China from the 18th to the mid-20th century, including sources that have not been published. Besides making new facts and sources accessible, the research presented in this book introduces a comparative perspective and provides a thorough literary and cultural analysis of the aforesaid travelogues.

Currently, much is said about the directions of development of modern China. However, we still do not know what will determine the expected superpower position of the Middle Kingdom. The book is an attempt to answer questions about China's main development challenges from a regional perspective. China aspires to become the country with the largest economy and development potential. This intention may turn out to be in vain if such significant disparities and development imbalances in the regional system are still present in China. The key to understanding the transformation of contemporary China is to recognize the internal determinants of the functioning of both the state and the economy from a regional perspective. A better understanding of the ways of managing regional development disparities may contribute to a more accurate assessment of the dynamics and directions of China's socio-economic development.

Postmillennial Trends in Anglophone Literatures, Cultures and Media
The book offers a collection of papers that draw on contemporary developments in cultural studies in their discussions of postmillennial trends in works of Anglophone literature and media. The first section of the book, “Addressing the Theories of a New Cultural Paradigm”, comprises ten essays that present, respectively, performatist, metamodernist, digimodernist, and hypomodernist readings of selected texts in order to test the usefulness of recent theories in explorations of the new paradigm in literary, media and food studies. The papers cover a wide variety of genres, including the novel, the film, the documentary, the cookbook, the food magazine, and the food commercial, and present a number of themes which shed light on the nature of the new paradigm. The second part of the volume, “Mapping the Dynamics of a New Sensibility”, offers a wider perspective and presents seven papers that search for evidence of a new sensibility in selected examples of postmillennial texts. These contributions move beyond the frameworks of the theories explored in the first part in order to offer new perspectives in the contributors’ respective fields of interest.

Chiny inspirują do miana państwa o największej gospodarce i potencjale rozwojowym, co wymaga wykształcenia i ciągłego podtrzymywania zdolności modernizacyjnych w wymiarze gospodarczym, społecznym, politycznym czy technologicznym. Zamiar ten może okazać się próżny, jeżeli nadal w Chinach obecne będą tak znaczące dysproporcje rozwojowe jak dotychczas, także w układzie regionalnym. Polityka rozwoju regionalnego stanowi specyficzny przykład koegzystencji interwencji publicznej i wykorzystania mechanizmów rynkowych. Powyższemu towarzyszą polityczna centralizacja i gospodarcza decentralizacja. We wdrażaniu polityki rozwoju regionalnego Chiny podążają drogą inwestycji, które w założeniu mają budować konkurencyjność słabiej rozwiniętych regionów. Strategia ta przyczyniła się do niebywałej rozbudowy infrastruktury, wciąż jednak bez przełożenia na sukces w zakresie spójności. Dysproporcje nadal stanowią wyzwanie nie tyle dla autorytarnego systemu sprawowania władzy, ile dla rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego kraju jako całości.
