This book, dedicated to Professor Georgi M. Dimirovski on his anniversary, contains new research directions, challenges, and many relevant applications related to many aspects within the broadly perceived areas of systems and control, including signal analysis and intelligent systems. The project comprises two volumes with papers written by well known and very active researchers and practitioners. The first volume is focused on more foundational aspects related to general issues in systems science and mathematical systems, various problems in control and automation, and the use of computational and artificial intelligence in the context of systems modeling and control. The second volume is concerned with a presentation of relevant applications, notably in robotics, computer networks, telecommunication, fault detection/diagnosis, as well as in biology and medicine, and economic, financial, and social systems too.
This presentation begins with a rapid survey of the evolution of autonomous (arguably intelligent?) control systems. Will such machines ever develop to a point where they possess properties analogous to consciousness? The remainder of the presentation broadly covers; Man's quest for unifying structural knowledge about Nature and about how Society works. Thus we find consideration of mathematics (is it man-made?), phenomena such as stability, causality, invariance, reversibility and determinism in the natural world and consideration of human aspects such as human beliefs and values (from where are they obtained?), political development and evolution. Nearly all the material here is in the form of quoted extracts from distinguished authorities (and much of what is quoted is interestingly controversial as I found from first hand experience). This document retains the staccato, slide plus text style of the original oral presentation, intended then, as now, to stimulate further investigation.

Rob Milne was a remarkable man. He died of a heart attack on the 5th of June 2005 while climbing Mount Everest in Nepal. Milne (48) lived an active life: combining his three ‘careers’ seemingly effortlessly. He was a hi-tech entrepreneur, an AI researcher and a passionate mountaineer. Mount Everest was last on his list of the highest summits on each continent. He was only 400 meters from the top when he died. This publication commemorates and celebrates the life of Rob Milne. It covers all facets of Rob Milne's life and contains contributions by the people who have known him well and pay tribute to his life and his legacy. Rob Milne is survived by his wife Val and his two children Alex and Rosemary. After he died, his wife said in a radio interview: “Rob died at the top, doing what he loved.”
