Vulnerability in Scandinavian Art and Culture
In this open access book, seventeen scholars discuss how contemporary Scandinavian art and media have become important arenas to articulate and stage various forms of vulnerability in the Scandinavian welfare states. How do discourses of privilege and vulnerability coexist and interact in Scandinavia? How do the Scandinavian countries respond to vulnerability given increased migration? How is vulnerability distributed in terms of margin and centre, normality and deviance? And how can vulnerability be used to move audiences towards each other and accomplish change? We address these questions in an interdisciplinary study that brings examples from celebrated and provocative fiction and documentary films, TV-series, reality TV, art installations, design, literature, graphic art, radio podcasts and campaigns on social media.
Place Reinvention
Through an interdisciplinary range of case studies from across the Northern rim of Europe, this volume shows how place reinvention as a concept affects not only global cities but also marginal regions. Linking place reinvention to the economic, the symbolic and the political production of space, the volume puts forward insights into how 'marginal areas' understand their role in the global competition between places and regions through their branding strategies, playing with representations of the unique and the ordinary, urban and rural, reindustrialization and cultural economy. It also shows how and why some places seem to retain and strengthen their uniqueness, whilst others are losing their local distinctiveness in the struggle to survive.

Socio-Spatial Theory in Nordic Geography

Including chapters by geographers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, it reflects how theories about the relations between the social and the spatial have been developed, adopted and critiqued in Nordic human geography in relation to a wide range of themes, concepts and approaches. The book also traces institutional developments, distinct geographical traditions and intellectual histories, as well as authors’ own experiences as geographers in and beyond the Nordic area. The chapters together introduce and engage with debates and discussions that permeate Nordic geography and allows readers a glimpse of geographical thinking and the role of socio-spatial theory in the Nordic countries. The Novel and Europe
This book examines the ways in which fiction has addressed the continent since the Second World War. Drawing on novelists from Europe and elsewhere, the volume analyzes the literary response to seven dominant concerns (ideas of Europe, conflict, borders, empire, unification, migration, and marginalization), offering a ground-breaking study of how modern and contemporary writers have participated in the European debate. The sixteen essays view the chosen writers, not as representatives of national literatures, but as participants in transcontinental discussion that has occurred across borders, cultures, and languages. In doing so, the contributors raise questions about the forms of power operating across and radiating from Europe, challenging both the institutionalized divisions of the Cold War and the triumphalist narrative of continental unity currently being written in Brussels.
Place, (In)Equality and Gender
This mapping presents a selected overview of existing research on gender, education and population flows in the Nordic peripheral areas. These areas are faced with a series of challenges that cannot be analyzed nor solved without taking a gender perspective into account. The challenges relate to, for instance, altered living conditions caused by global changes, stagnated or negative economic development, decrease in the amount of workplaces (particularly in the traditionally male-dominated professions) as well as, not least, migration and depopulation which is partly due to the fact that the young people of the area (especially the women) move to bigger cities to educate themselves. The challenges in question are not only significant in relation to the viability and cohesion of the areas, but also for the men and women who live there and their mutual social relations.

Här får vi stifta bekantskap med hur livet kunde gestalta sig under en gången tid. Vi får följa två familjers vedermödor, glädje och motgångar på så vitt skilda ställen som Västerbottens kustland och storstaden Stockholm. Mor och dotter, Hildur och Elsa, hade alltid mycket att diskutera och det blev framförallt i brevform. Man pratade genom breven. Telefonen fanns ju, men användes sparsamt. Brevskrivningen kunde vara mycket intensiv, ibland varje dag. Breven möttes ibland på vägen mellan Gamla Falmark och Stockholm. Och det var åtskilliga kartonger med mat, bakverk och presenter som skickades med järnväg, mest upp till Norrland. Vi får ta del av galna och roliga händelser. Hur en nygift fru finner sig själv i äktenskapet, och utmaningarna med en nystart i Stockholm. De yngre medlemmarna i familjen hade ständigt kärleksbekymmer och kanske framförallt ekonomiska bekymmer. Kort sagt, här skildras livet som det var fram till mitten av 1937. Hoppas boken blir till nöje och eftertanke.
