The Holocaust has proved a defining event in German, European and even world history. It has left moral, legal and political legacies which shape the global community we live in today. This text is designed to introduce readers to the most important debates about the event. It discusses the origins and course of the Holocaust, as well as the motives of its perpetrators and the reactions of bystanders and victims alike. In the process, the study makes clear why 'history' is not just about the past. Martyn Housden is Reader in History at the University of Bradford. "Life-writing", an increasingly accepted category among scholars of literature and other disciplines, encompasses not just autobiography and biography, but also memoirs, diaries, letters, interviews, and even non-written texts such as film. Whether these were produced in diary or letter form as events unfolded or long after the event in the form of autobiographical prose, common to all are attempts by individuals to make sense of their experiences. In many such texts, the authors reassess their lives against the background of a broader public debate about the past. This book of essays examines German life-writing after major turning points in twentieth-century German history: the First World War, the Nazi era, the postwar division of Germany, and the collapse of socialism and German unification. The volume is distinctive because it combines an overview of academic approaches to the study of life-writing with a set of German-language case studies. In this respect it goes further than existing studies, which often present life-writing material without indicating how it might fit into our broader understanding of a particular culture or historical period.
The study asks what totalitarian regimes such as Bolshevism, National Socialism, and Putinism have in common. All of these totalitarian systems sought to destroy the universal principles of human morality by replacing them with group (class, racial or "traditional") values. The direct result of this substitution of values in history has been class terror, the Holocaust, and brutal violence against both one's own and other peoples. The author argues that crimes against humanity are committed on the basis of group rather than universal morality.
In 1939 all German Jews had to become members of a newly founded Reich Association. The Jewish functionaries of this organization were faced with circumstances and events that forced them to walk a fine line between responsible action and collaboration. They had hoped to support mass emigration, mitigate the consequences of the anti-Jewish measures, and take care of the remaining community. When the Nazis forbade emigration and started mass deportations in 1941, the functionaries decided to cooperate to prevent the “worst.” In choosing to cooperate, they came into direct opposition with the interests of their members, who were then deported. In June 1943 all unprotected Jews were deported along with their representatives, and the so-called intermediaries supplied the rest of the community, which consisted of Jews living in mixed marriages. The study deals with the tasks of these men, the fate of the Jews in mixed marriages, and what happened to the survivors after the war.
Numerous studies concerning transitional justice exist. However, comparatively speaking, the effects actually achieved by measures for coming to terms with dictatorships have seldom been investigated. There is an even greater lack of transnational analyses. This volume contributes to closing this gap in research. To this end, it analyses processes of coming to terms with the past in seven countries with different experiences of violence and dictatorship. The Anglican Bishop George Bell (of Chichester) and the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Willem A. Visser’t Hooft (of Geneva) exchanged hundreds of letters between 1938 and 1958. The correspondence, reproduced and commented upon here, mirrors the efforts made across the ecumenical movement to unite the Christian churches and also to come to terms with an age of international crisis and conflict. In these first decades of the World Council, it was widely felt that the Church could make a noteworthy contribution to the mitigation of political tensions all over the world. That’s why Bell and Visser’t Hooft talked not only to bishops and the clergy, but also to the prime ministers and presidents of many countries. They raised their voices in memoranda and published their public letters in important newspapers. This was the World Council’s most successful period.
