During the early republican period, architectural interventions in rural Turkey took the form of social engineering as part of the state's modernization and nationalization policies. Özge Sezer demonstrates how the state's particular programs had a powerful effect on rural life in the countryside. She examines the regime's goals and strategies for controlling the rural people through development projects and demographic shaping to create a strong Turkish identity and a loyal citizenry. The Turkish Novel and the Quest for Rationality is the first book to contextualize the Turkish novel with regard to the intellectual developments motivating the Turkish modernization project since the 18th century. The book provides a dialectical narrative for the emergence and development of the Turkish novel in order to highlight the genre’s critical role within the modernization project. In doing so, it also delineates the changing forms the novel assumes in the Turkish context from a platform for new literature to a manifestation of crisis in the face of totalizing rationality. The Euro-Mediterranean Migration System
The Euro-Mediterranean region can be seen as the focal point for movements between south and north. Starting with this observation, the author addresses the migration problems of the countries on the northern shore of the Mediterranean and the immigration countries of the European Union, which recruit labour from the southern shore (for example, Moroccans working in France, Belgium and Great Britain, Turks in Germany, France, Benelux and Scandinavia, Algerians in France and Tunisians in France and Italy).
