A Marxist Critique of Latin American Colonial Studies
During the mid-1980s, Latin American colonial studies came to be dominated by the various ‘post’ movements—post-structuralism, post-modernism, post-Marxism—characterized by their promotion of discursivity as the ultimate horizon of sociality. This volume confronts discourse theory and examples of its colonial application with an alternative Althusserian problematic that foregrounds modes of production and class struggle, to which end it further promotes a view of colonial societies as split, not along a horizontal, geographic axis that offsets the New World against Europe, but vertically through the opposition between dominant tributary/feudal formations and their emergent capitalist equivalent. Its fundamental claim is that the radical-sounding rhetoric of the various ‘post’ movements, far from energizing the politics of resistance to the forces of imperialism, actually greases the mechanisms of finance capital.
Journeys Through the Ideological Unconscious
Juan Carlos Rodríguez, who studied under Althusser in Paris in the 1970s, advanced beyond the positions that the French Marxist mapped out. He did this by theorizing the existence of an ideological unconscious, to be set alongside its libidinal or Freudian counterpart. This book elucidates and elaborates upon the workings of this ideological unconscious through the close analysis of literary production in Spain, extending over the transition from feudalism to capitalism. It also explores the extent to which the ideological unconscious intertwines, historically, with the libidinal unconscious. The conclusions reached will challenge assumptions commonly held by sociologists, Hispanists and cultural historians of all kinds.

Read employs a psychoanalytic model which sees civilization as a manner of instinctual renunciation in this analysis of selected texts from the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. Focusing on their moments of silence and contradiction, he demonstrates that certain attitudes toward the body expressed in these texts have a basis, albeit unconscious, in a motivation which is ultimately political. The central topics, deeply intertwined thematically and theoretically, relate to the nature and development of language; to the Baroque art of Gongora and Quevedo; to Feijoo's defense of the rationalist subject set against Torres Villarroel's subversion of the same; and to the neo-classical aesthetics of Luzan and Arteaga. The result is an interdisciplinary approach that challenges traditional assumptions in both literary criticism and linguistic historiography.
