Language Learning and Teaching in a Multilingual World
The majority of people around the world live in multilingual societies, and so it follows that plurilingualism should be considered normal. This book proposes a flexible and adaptive framework for designing and implementing language learning environments and tasks, which will be useful for practitioners working in classrooms where many languages are already spoken. The authors begin by presenting a state-of-the-art review of current research on language learning, language teaching and multilingual language acquisition. This is followed by a qualitative review of 37 multilingual research projects, which are treated as case studies to inform the practical guidance that constitutes the remainder of the book. The information and practical framework contained within this book will be of interest to researchers, teachers and teacher educators.
Migration and Language Education in Southern Europe
The entry of migrant populations to Europe, and especially to countries of Southern Europe, is expected to drastically change the make-up of state school classes as learners of various ages, ethnic backgrounds, and mother tongues are going to co-exist within the same educational setting. In Greece, in particular, the landscape of education has already started changing as a significant number of immigrant students have joined mainstream classrooms. This volume maps this new educational reality and its challenges, as Greek teachers are required, with very limited training and resources, to address those students’ educational and socio-emotional needs. All chapters are authored by Greek researchers who are actively involved in the study of refugees’ and immigrants’ education, their needs, and their educational, linguistic and political rights. Despite the fact that education for immigrants and refugees has become the focus of much research on a global level, the ongoing rapid rise of immigrant populations in Southern Europe has not been adequately researched. This book consequently meets the need for further research and empirical studies in this field.

Boundaries and Bridges

However, it probably represents the most common type of contact in the world, where colonization, rapid socioeconomic and demographic change, and society-wide multilingualism have led to dramatic linguistic change. African Multilingualisms
Although multilingualism is the norm in the day-to-day lives of most sub-Saharan Africans, multilingualism in settings outside of cities has so far been under-explored. This gap is striking when considering that in many parts of Africa, individual multilingualism was widespread long before the colonial period and centuries before the continent experienced large-scale urbanization. The edited collection African Multilingualisms fills this gap by presenting results from recent and ongoing research based on fieldwork in rural African environments as well as environments characterized by contact between urban and rural communities of speakers. The contributors—mostly Africans themselves, including a number of emerging scholars—present findings that both complement and critique current scholarship on African multilingualism. In addition, new methods and tools are introduced for the study of multilingualism in rural settings, alongside illustrations of the kinds of results that they yield. African Multilingualisms reveals an impressive diversity in the features of local language ideologies, multilingual behaviors, and the relationship between language and identity.
Studies in Comparative Pragmatics
In the current discourse in pragmatics, multi-perspective methods are seen as the best way to understand language use in context. Within this discussion, the volume adopts diverse approaches to pragmatics, and focuses on comparing a wide selection of languages, including English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Japanese, Polish, and Swedish. The contributions deal with grammatical expressions, prosody, textual genres and speech acts, which occur in different social interactions and in multicultural environments, including foreign language learning and lingua franca situations. Each topic is analysed by comparing its usage in at least two different languages or by contrasting the linguistic behaviour of different groups of language users.
