Uyghur Texts in Context
The current volume presents a selection of 126 texts in Uyghur posted in public spaces, translated, and annotated for this book. The author started photographing Uyghur texts in 2008 at the time of the Beijing olympics and continued to do so during 2009, the year of the so-called “Urumqi uprising” of July 5. This event generated a stream of texts posted in public spaces that reflected the efforts made by the authorities to re-establish control. In the course of his travels in the years thereafter the author continued to add to the corpus of photographed Uyghur texts. At the same time he started collecting, as comprehensively as possible, various types of folders, brochures, handouts, and product wrappings with texts illustrating aspects of Uyghur culture and society. The texts, published here for the first time, are primary source materials documenting a wide variety of aspects of daily life of the Uyghurs in Shinjang. The implicit messages or explicit references contained in many of these texts give them significance as clues towards an understanding of the existential realities they reflect or illustrate.
Unruly Speech
Unruly Speech explores how Uyghurs in China and in the diaspora transgress sociopolitical limits with "unruly" communication practices in a quest for change. Drawing on research in China, the United States, and Germany, Saskia Witteborn situates her study against the backdrop of displacement and shows how naming practices and witness accounts become potent ways of resistance in everyday interactions and in global activism. Featuring the voices of Uyghurs from three continents, Unruly Speech analyzes the discursive and material force of place names, social media, surveillance, and the link between witnessing and the discourse on human rights. The book provides a granular view of disruptive communication: its global political moorings and socio-technical control. The rich ethnographic study will appeal to audiences interested in migration and displacement, language and social interaction, advocacy, digital surveillance, and a transnational China.

Xinjiang – eine Region im Spannungsfeld von Geschichte und Moderne
Seit einigen Jahren ist Xinjiang zum Gegenstand einer weltweiten Debatte geworden, bei der Ethnizität und Menschenrechtsfragen im Vordergrund stehen. Der Vorwurf des Genozids wird erhoben. Mit diesem Band soll der Blick auf Xinjiang aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht geweitet werden. Einbezogen werden geschichtliche und geopolitische Hintergründe sowie neuere Erkenntnisse. Dabei kann der gesamte Xinjiang-Diskurs in den westlichen Medien nicht losgelöst von der allgemeinen China-Politik und der neuen „Systemrivalität“ zwischen „dem Westen“ und „den Autokratien“ gesehen werden.
