This is a book comprising selected papers of colleagues and friends of Heinrich Begehr on the occasion of his 80th birthday. It aims at being a tribute to the excellent achievements of Heinrich Begehr in complex analysis and complex differential equations, and especially to his prominent role as one of the creators and long-time leader of the International Society for Analysis, its Applications and Computation (ISAAC).
The aim of this third edition is to give an accessible and essentially self-contained account of pseudo-differential operators based on the previous edition. New chapters notwithstanding, the elementary and detailed style of earlier editions is maintained in order to appeal to the largest possible group of readers. The focus of this book is on the global theory of elliptic pseudo-differential operators on Lp(Rn).The main prerequisite for a complete understanding of the book is a basic course in functional analysis up to the level of compact operators. The International Society for Analysis, its Applications and Computation (ISAAC) has held its international congresses biennially since 1997. This proceedings volume reports on the progress in analysis, applications and computation in recent years as covered and discussed at the 7th ISAAC Congress. This volume includes papers on partial differential equations, function spaces, operator theory, integral transforms and equations, potential theory, complex analysis and generalizations, stochastic analysis, inverse problems, homogenization, continuum mechanics, mathematical biology and medicine. The discovery of quantum mechanics in the years 1925-1930 necessitated the consideration of associating ordinary functions with non-commuting operators. Methods were proposed by Born/Jordan, Kirkwood, and Weyl. Sometime later, Moyal saw the connection between the Weyl rule and the Wigner distribution, which had been proposed by Wigner in 1932 as a way of doing quantum statistical mechanics. The basic idea of associating functions with operators has since been generalized and developed to a high degree. It has found several application fields, including quantum mechanics, pseudo-differential operators, time-frequency analysis, quantum optics, wave propagation, differential equations, image processing, radar, and sonar. This book aims at bringing together the results from the above mentioned fields in a unified manner and showing the reader how the methods have been applied. A wide audience is addressed, particularly students and researchers who want to obtain an up-to-date working knowledge of the field. The mathematics is accessible to the uninitiated reader and is presented in a straightforward manner.

In this volume, dedicated to the memory of Hong Kong University students, faculty and members of the Court who lost their lives as a result of hostilities in the Far East during 1941-1945, we ask what happened to the University during those years of Japanese occupation when there was only the shell of a campus left standing on Pokfulam Road. Though physically non-existent, the idea of the University persisted, as shown by the recollections here of twenty-five contributors, many of whom were students of faculty when war broke out. Their stories of imprisonment or escape, mainly to China, help to capture something of the spirit of those challenging times that eventually led to the re-establishing of the University in 1948 and its remarkable growth since then.
