Chapters on the different forms of uveitis are in a homogeneous reader-friendly format, with identification of core messages, explanation of etiology and pathogenesis, up-to-date information on diagnostics and differential diagnosis and guidance on the most appropriate forms of treatment and prognosis. Helpful flow charts are included to assist in identification of potential underlying disorders and the reader will also have online access to one hundred informative case reports demonstrating the different courses of intraocular inflammation. The authors are world experts keen to share their vast experience with the reader. Although considerable light has been shed on the mechanisms of ocular immunity over the past 20 years, a complete understanding still eludes our grasp. To many ophthalmologists immunology itself is a comparatively new field. This volume will bring the latest findings in immunological research and the resulting new therapy methods to the ophthalmologist in practice. The scope of the topics goes from general principles of immuno-ophthalmology to more specific ones such as immunology of corneal transplantation or immune regulation of uveoretinal inflammation. With its broad scope of contributions, this publication will not only be significant to the ophthalmologist, but also to pediatricians, specialists in internal medicine as well as dermatologists confronted with eye diseases.
Behçet's Disease (BD) is one of the most-studied systemic disorders characterized by an occlusive vasculopathy of multiple organs. The etiology and pathogenesis of BD are still unclear, but there is evidence for genetic, immunologic and infectious factors in the onset and throughout the course of the disease. Immunology of Behçet's Disease highlights various aspects of BD. After an epidemiological overview, the clinical presentation of ocular and non-ocular symptoms of BD are summarized. The immunopathological changes reflect a chronic vasculitis of arterioles, venules and capillaries. The role of T-cells, but also of NK-T-cells, secreted cytokines and neutrophils is covered. For years mic...
Seeking to enable the physician to make more accurate and rapid decisions regarding the treatment of patients with uveitis. This text is intended for both the practising and training ophthalmologist and aims to provide a concise yet thorough, quick reference guide for the ophthalmologist.
In recent years the importance of antigen-presenting cells and their influence on the eyes has been elucidated. We have learned that nearly every structure of the eye harbors these cells, yet they differ in their activities and thus in the ways in which they protect against - or participate in - diseases of the eye. Antigen-Presenting Cells and the
Beh's Disease (BD) is one of the most-studied systemic disorders characterized by an occlusive vasculopathy of multiple organs. The etiology and pathogenesis of BD are still unclear, but there is evidence for genetic, immunologic and infectious factors in the onset and throughout the course of the disease. This book summarizes our knowledge regarding the most important factors that induce or trigger BD. After an epidemiological overview, the clinical presentation of ocular and non-ocular symptoms of BD is summarized. The immunopathological changes reflect a chronic vasculitis of arterioles, venules, and capillaries. The book covers the role of T-cells, NK-T-cells, secreted cytokines, and neutrophils as well as immune reactions against various microbial heat shock proteins. It shows that the pathogenic gene involved in the development of BD is pinpointed to HLA-B51. It also discusses the treatment of BD, including anti-TNF-alpha-antibodies and interferon-alpha.
