When Charles Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities ends, the dying hero Sydney Carton foresees that the woman he loves will someday have a son and name it after him. Evrémonde brings that child to life, and follows the course of young Sydney as he strives to live up to his exalted name. It chronicles the harrowing escape of his parents, Charles and Lucie Darnay, from revolutionary France and their family's ongoing struggle to recover from the tragic loss of their friend Mr. Carton. Relocated to Austria, and soon enduring French occupation and the ravages of the Napoleonic wars, the family is consumed by the urgency to conceal their fugitive status and aristocratic identity. Differences arise between husband and wife, parents and children, on how best to do so. Their conflict permits the new Préfet of Police in Vienna-a troubled figure with a particular interest in their youngest daughter-to capitalize on the various weaknesses of each family member, as they succumb to their unique fears and neuroses about the past. Ultimately he is successful in rooting out the family's origin, and proves to be everything Charles Darnay has long feared his escape would come to bear.

You were born in a hospital? Hilde says as she lays down her black bread and cheese sandwich. She sits opposite me at my kitchen table. Looking up from my salad, I nod. Yes, I thought everyone by the 1940s was born in a hospital. Hell no. Hilde stares at me. In Germany I was born at home, on the couch, delivered by a midwife. Thus began the noontime conversations of an American housewife and a German cleaning lady about their contrasting lives during and after WWII. My mother taught me that an important word in any language is while. While one thing is happening, so is another. While I wash dishes, Peggy, you dry. While we are in nighttime, someone is in daylight. While one person dies, another is born. While WWII began, two little girls were born and grew up in opposing countries and living in its aftermath. With this word while, we started this book of extreme contrasts, startling discoveries and sometimes striking similarities.

After a failed attempt to walk the Camino de Santiago right after I retired in 2007, I decided to try again in 2012. I left my door on May 1st with a one-way plane ticket and never looked back. I arrived in St. Jean Pied-de-Port and the next morning and started Walking the Walk. I never had a bad day but I needed to find a way home after seeing the sunset at the end of the world. This story is my story about me Walking the Walk.

The book explores political turbulence in the late Soviet Union with the focus on Perestroika (reconstruction), 1985-1991. The author views those momentous processes through the political activity of the book’s key figure, who enthusiastically supported Perestroika and promoted and defended reforms in the Communist Party despite impediments by his fellow functionaries. At the core are the revolutionary events that took place in Volgograd, in the south of European Russia, in the winter of 1990. These resulted in the overthrow of the whole leadership of the Volgograd Region. The author argues that the interests of the younger generation of party functionaries came together with the popular movement in the USSR in 1989-1991 and created a unique situation, which unintentionally resulted in the collapse of the Soviet Union. The book also contains a personal dimension and reveals many interesting details of the life of the high-ranking Soviet Party nomenklatura.
