The Issue of Hijab

The need for the woman to cover in front of a male stranger (ghayri maḥram) is one of the important Islamic issues. In the Holy Qur'an itself, there has been an order in this regard. In essence, therefore, one cannot doubt about the Islamic dimension of the subject. Woman's covering of herself from a male stranger is one of the manifestations of the need for segregation between male and female strangers. In the same manner, the impermissibility of a private meeting between a male and a female stranger is also one of its manifestations. This subject must be discussed under five headings: 1. Is covering (ḥijāb) among the peculiarities of Islam and after the advent of Islam, has it been ad...

As the second main source of the true religion of Islam, hadith has a history full of ups and downs as far as the manner of its transmittal and the periods of its compilation and publication are concerned. Those who are acquainted with Islamic history have all acknowledged that from the time of transmittal up to now, hadith as been associated with many desirable as well as undesirable events, and its compilation and publication in some periods have had both faithful advocates and stern adversaries. For this reason, learning the “history of hadith” – though a piece of knowledge outside the different branches of the science of hadith – is essential for all those who want to benefit fro...

Discursive Theology Volume 2

Islamic theology is nourished by two sources, viz., reason ('aql) and revelation (waḥyi). Firstly, by citing axiomatic and definitive principles, reason proves the existence, knowledge, power, and wisdom of God, and on the basis of these rational theological doctrines, it also establishes the necessity for revelation and the infallibility of the prophets. And through revelation and prophethood (nubuwwah), it recognizes anew all the spiritual doctrines. Once again, by utilizing logical thinking, it embarks on elucidating and reinforcing those doctrines. On this basis, although Islamic theology is also anchored in revealed (wahyānī) texts and facts, it utilizes the method of reflection and...

The Revival of Islamic Thought

'The Revival of Islamic Thought' consists of a series of five lectures given with the same title by the martyred professor Āyatullāh Muṭahharī at Huṣayniyyah Irshād in 1349 AHS (circa 1970). The first lecture entitled "Iqbāl and the Revival of Religious Thought" was given on Ordībehest 7, 1349 AHS (April 27, 1970) in commemoration of the Islamic reformer 'Allāmah Iqbāl of Lahore, Pakistan. The succeeding lectures were delivered with an interval of one week from each other. As pointed out by the martyred professor himself, it is obvious that this topic is broad and these five lectures are just an introduction to it. Of course, there are also relevant discussions in his other works such as Ihyā-ye Tafakkur-e Dīnī [Revival of Religious Thought] in the book Dah Guftār [Ten Discourses].
