Frontier Constitutions

Frontier Constitutions is a pathbreaking study of the cultural transformations arrived at by Spanish colonists, native-born creoles, mestizos (Chinese and Spanish), and indigenous colonial subjects in the Philippines during the crisis of colonial hegemony in the nineteenth century, and the social anomie that resulted from this crisis in law and politics. John D. Blanco argues that modernity in the colonial Philippines should not be understood as an imperfect version of a European model but as a unique set of expressions emerging out of contradictions—expressions that sanctioned new political communities formed around the precariousness of Spanish rule. Blanco shows how artists and writers struggled to synthesize these contradictions as they attempted to secure the colonial order or, conversely, to achieve Philippine independence.

They taught Ayurveda to Indra and Indra, the celestial God taught to Athreya.

This book investigates five menus, from England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. These dishes may seem truly national, or even regional, but the reality is very different. Few of the ingredients used originated in Europe, and many have travelled half way around the world. Tracing the history of the dishes opens up the whole of human history. We can see the importance of food in the ancient migrations and struggles to survive of our earliest ancestors, in the development of farming, trade and technology, and in the European exploration and colonisation of the world. This is truly delicious history, where the food we love takes centre stage and kings and politicians become supporting actors.

Handbook of 200 Medicinal Plants

This book is designed to provide pharmacologists and researchers of natural products a comprehensive review of 200 medicinal plants, their vernacular names in various languages and their medicinal uses around the world, and in some cases, a historical perspective. Chemical constituents of each plant with the putative active constituent, and available up to date pharmacological studies (until 2017 on PubMed) with each medical activity explored and its relationship with traditional uses, are described for each plant. Any variations in chemical constituents and their effects on pharmacological studies outcome have been highlighted. All clinical trials conducted, with sufficient details, have been included. Nationalities and racial identities of participants of clinical trials are identified to impress upon the social, cultural and dietary influences on the clinical outcomes. Toxicity studies and potential interactions with prescribed drugs, and full spectrum of references are included.
