This book is an original and international work that seeks to impart new perspectives on leisure studies, based on interdisciplinary dialogues that are, for the first time, brought together and made available in English. The present volume presents new perspectives on critical leisure theories, as well as an interdisciplinary perspective on leisure studies, departing from the traditional theoretical and practical viewpoint, with a political focus and in dialogue with fields of study such as politics, education, philosophy, urban space and others. The book differs from the most common approaches on leisure by presenting new theoretical and practical perspectives on leisure stemming from different realities in countries such as Brazil and Portugal, considering different aspects of each place and taking into account leisure as a political practice.

Reading Illegitimacy in Early Iberian Literature
Reading Illegitimacy in Early Iberian Literature presents illegitimacy as a fluid, creative, and negotiable concept in early literature which challenges society’s definition of what is acceptable. Through the medieval epic poems Cantar de Mio Cid and Mocedades de Rodrigo, the ballad tradition, Cervantes’s Novelas ejemplares, and Lope de Vega’s theatre, Geraldine Hazbun demonstrates that illegitimacy and legitimacy are interconnected and flexible categories defined in relation to marriage, sex, bodies, ethnicity, religion, lineage, and legacy. Both categories are subject to the uncertainties and freedoms of language and fiction and frequently constructed around axes of quantity and completeness. These literary texts, covering a range of illegitimate figures, some with an historical basis, demonstrate that truth, propriety, and standards of behaviour are not forged in the law code or the pulpit but in literature’s fluid system of producing meaning.
Seeing Politics Otherwise
When confronting twentieth-century political oppression and violence, writers and artists in Portugal and South America have often emphasized the complex relationship between freedom and tyranny. In Seeing Politics Otherwise, Patricia Vieira uses an interdisciplinary approach to explore the interrelation of politics and representations of vision and blindness in Latin American and Iberian literature, film, and art. Vieira's discussion focuses on three literary works: Graciliano Ramos's Memoirs of Prison, Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden, and José Saramago's Blindness, with supplemental analyses of sculpture and film by Ana Maria Pacheco, Bruno Barreto, and Marco Bechis. These artists use metaphors of blindness to denounce the totalizing gaze of dictatorial regimes. Rather than equating blindness with deprivation, Vieira argues that shadows, blindfolds, and blindness are necessary elements for re-imagining the political world and re-acquiring a political voice. Seeing Politics Otherwise offers a compelling analysis of vision and its forcible deprivation in the context of art and political protest.

¿A qué nos referimos con el reto de hacer ciudadanía a través del ocio y la recreación? ¿Qué papel desempeñan los espacios en el logro de este reto? ¿Cuál es el potencial de los espacios públicos y privados en este proceso de construcción? Y más importante aún si cabe ¿de qué ocio hablamos cuando afirmamos que es capaz de favorecer estos procesos de construcción ciudadana? El contenido de este libro gira en torno a tres conceptos: ocio y recreación, como promotores de una ciudadanía participativa, dinámica y formada para la búsqueda activa de su desarrollo personal y comunitario; los espacios en el marco de las ciudades, contenedores privilegiados de toda acción ciudadana; y, finalmente, la ciudadanía, entendida como estatuto que congrega tanto deberes como derechos individuales y colectivos de las personas que habitan la ciudad (Borja, 2003). La consideración de los nexos que vehiculan las relaciones entre estos tres conceptos es la clave para profundizar en las contribuciones del ocio y la recreación a la construcción de ciudadanía.
