This publication brings together an outstanding ensemble of works by artist “explorers” selected from France’s national collections. Whatever the terrain — on land or at the depths of the ocean, real, virtual or even at the farthest limits of the subconscious — exploration remains a quest, accomplished thanks to and in spite of oneself, to redefine the contours of a world, whether it exists for real or in our imagination. In this respect, exploration is not so unlike art, which is largely inspired by it, both in terms of how it is done and its objective. From Voyage autour de ma chambre by Xavier de Maistre, whose detailed inventory encompasses just a single room, to Jules Vernes...

Bill Jacobson (born 1955) is widely known for his blurry black-and-white portrait photographs of the 1980s, which referenced the AIDS epidemic in their implications of fleeting presence and human fragility. Whether shooting figures, street scenes or landscapes, Jacobson has consistently projected a sensation of both personal and collective memories fading into oblivion. A Series of Human Decisionspresents a new body of work as sharp as his previous work was immaterial, and signals a whole new approach to similarly melancholic imagery. Here, crystal-clear renderings of vacated, somewhat lonesome spaces, both private and industrial, inside and outside, intimate and alienating, convey the extreme constructedness of what surrounds us. As Jacobson explains, the title "refers to the idea that we live in a highly constructed world. The world is just that, a series of human decisions, one layered upon another over time. We move constantly from one fabricated arena to another." This monograph includes an in-depth interview between the artist and Ian Berry.

Armpit of the Mole

  • Categories: Art

Mimicking the aesthetics and texture of the famed Moleskin sketchbooks that artists have used for decades to hash out their ideas, Armpit of the Mole may very well become your new favorite drawing compilation. Forty-four artists have contributed six pages each to this book to present here their research of ideas or their depictions of various universes. Here Marcel Dzama brushes up against Michelle Naismuth, and Wim Delvoye and later blends into Florian & Michael Quistrebert, who lead to Thierry Agnone. The styles differ from distant to confrontational, formal to narrative, obsessional to nonchalant, and controversial to bucolic. Flipping through Armpit of the Mole, it feels as though someone tore pieces out of each artist's sketchbook and bound them all together. Yet, the collection of images is thought out and designed like a succession of varied and original works that are different yet connected--much like a good DJ set.

Simon Hantaï and the Reserves of Painting

  • Categories: Art

The Hungarian-born French painter Simon Hantaï (1922–2008) is best known for abstract, large-format works produced using pliage: the painting of a crumpled, gathered, or systematically pleated canvas that the artist then unfolds and stretches for exhibition. In her study of this profoundly influential artist, Molly Warnock presents a persuasive historical account of his work, his impact on a younger generation of French artists, and the genesis and development of the practice of pliage over time. Simon Hantaï and the Reserves of Painting covers the entirety of Hantaï’s expansive oeuvre, from his first aborted experiments with folding around 1950 to his post-pliage experiments with dig...
