Trees and Forests of Tropical Asia

Trees and Forests of Tropical Asia

Informed by decades of researching tropical Asian forests, a comprehensive, up-to-date, and beautifully illustrated synthesis of the natural history of this unique place. Trees and Forests of Tropical Asia invites readers on an expedition into the leafy, humid, forested landscapes of tropical Asia—the so-called tapovan, a Sanskrit word for the forest where knowledge is attained through tapasya, or inner struggle. Peter Ashton and David Lee, two of the world’s leading scholars on Asian tropical rain forests, reveal the geology and climate that have produced these unique forests, the diversity of species that inhabit them, the means by which rain forest tree species evolve to achieve unique ecological space, and the role of humans in modifying the landscapes over centuries. Following Peter Ashton’s extensive On the Forests of Tropical Asia, the first book to describe the forests of the entire tropical Asian region from India east to New Guinea, this new book provides a more condensed and updated overview of tropical Asian forests written accessibly for students as well as tropical forest biologists, ecologists, and conservation biologists.

The spread of invasive alien species (IAS) is creating complex and far-reaching challenges that threaten both the natural biological riches of the earth and the well being of its citizens. While the problem is global, the nature and severity of the impacts on society, economic life, health, and natural heritage are distributed unevenly across nations and regions. Thus, some aspects of the problem require solutions tailored to the specific values, needs, and priorities of nations while others call for consolidated action by the larger world community. Preventing the international movement of invasive alien species and coordinating a timely and effective response to invasions will require coop...

Natural World Heritage sites are internationally recognized as having the highest global conservation significance and include iconic places such as the Serengeti, Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands. These renowned sites offer crucial insight into the successes and challenges on the frontlines of conservation, but only about half of the natural sites have been regularly monitored through the main monitoring mechanisms of the World Heritage Convention. The IUCN World Heritage Outlook monitoring system, which consists of Conservation Outlook Assessments, complements the Conventions monitoring mechanisms and assesses all World Heritage sites in recognition of their natural "Outstanding Universal Value." This report describes the methodology for the IUCN World Heritage Outlook, reviews the rating system applied and then summarizes the first set of global results. We hope the IUCN World Heritage Outlook will serve as a dynamic new tool to assist in celebrating best practice in World Heritage sites and in helping to address the management challenges in some of the most iconic places on Earth.
