Europe at the Crossroads
The far right is on the rise. And there are signs that part of the political mainstream in Europe, the US, and beyond is considering accommodating far-right populist parties and their divisive, ethno-nationalist programs. Europe at the Crossroads is an urgent scholarly response to the sociopolitical challenges that far-right programs pose to the idea of a more egalitarian world. It offers an interdisciplinary analysis and critique of the dynamics of the far right in Europe from Poland to the UK, from Sweden to Greece. The authors present pertinent alternatives when tackling the exclusionary rhetoric and the politics of resentment. Each contributor investigates the current advance of far right populism and the threat to liberal democracy. Their texts address the historical roots and activities of the ideologies behind Orbanism or Brexit for example. The slogan 'Fortress Europe' once a pejorative term now appeals to large numbers of voters. The authors analyze the power balance in the European Parliament, particularly in connection with the elections in the spring 2019.

After the end
After the End argues that the cultural imaginaries and practices of the Cold War continue to deeply shape the present in profound but largely unnoticed ways across the global North and in the global South. The argument draws examples from literature and literary criticism, film, music, the historical and social scientific record and past and present physical sites to consider the bunker as a material form, an image and as a fantasy that took shape in the global North in the 1960s and that spread globally into the twenty-first century. After the End reminds us not only that most of the world’s peoples have lived with or died from apocalyptic conditions for centuries, but that the Cold War imaginaries that grew from and fed those conditions, continue to survive as well.
Gastfreundschaft und Gastrecht
In der gesellschaftlichen Debatte über Migration geht gern vergessen, dass unsere Kultur seit Jahrtausenden das Konzept der Gastfreundschaft kennt. Es hat eine lange philosophische, religiöse und politische Tradition. Aber ist es auch heute noch tragfähig? Inwiefern trägt die aus Christentum, Judentum und Islam bekannte Fundierung der Gastfreundschaft noch auf dem Hintergrund aktueller globaler Migrationsströme und emotionaler Debatten über Migration und Fremdheit? Diesen Fragen stellen sich im ersten Teil des Bands der Theologe und Islamwissenschaftler Samuel Martin Behloul, die Philosophin Heidrun Friese und der Kulturwissenschaftler Walter Leimgruber. Im zweiten Teil kommen Autorinnen und Autoren zu Wort, die über praktische Erfahrung in der Flüchtlingsbetreuung verfügen – von der Menschenrechtsaktivistin über den reformierten Gemeindepfarrer bis zu Kennern des Migrationsrechts. Schliesslich schildern Migrantinnen und Migranten selbst ihre teilweise belastenden, teilweise positiven Erfahrungen als «Gäste» in einer ihnen fremden Lebenswelt.
Status und Funktion: Zu Theorie und Praxis des literarischen Werks
Gleichwohl der Werkbegriff in der literaturwissenschaftlichen Praxis bis heute ein routiniert verwendeter Grundbegriff ist, gehört er zu den umstrittensten Konzepten in Literaturtheorie und Ästhetik. Um seine widersprüchliche Rolle zu erklären, rekonstruiert und systematisiert diese Studie zentrale Werkbegriffe und ihre Funktionen im jeweiligen Theoriekontext. Darüber hinaus konturiert sie einen sozialontologisch fundierten pragmatischen Werkbegriff, anhand dessen ‚Werk‘ als Status von Texten bestimmt wird und mit dessen Hilfe am Beispiel des Œuvres von Max Frisch ästhetische, epistemische, moralische, rechtliche, politische und ökonomische Funktionen des Werkstatus differenziert und beschrieben werden. Auf diese Weise rückt die Studie die Privilegierung von Texten durch die Zuschreibung von Werkstatus in den Blick und arbeitet die Folgen dieser Privilegierung für den Umgang mit Literatur heraus. Sie stellt ein Instrumentarium zur Beschreibung und Analyse der Werkpraxis bereit und zeigt, dass und wie sich bereits die Konstitution und Funktionalisierung von Werkstatus als Teil der literarischen Praxis begreifen lassen.
