A philosophy of human hope

A philosophy of human hope

Few reference works in philosophy have articles on hope. Few also are systematic or large-scale philosophical studies of hope. Hope is admitted to be important in people's lives, but as a topic for study, hope has largely been left to psychologists and theologians. For the most part philosophers treat hope en passant. My aim is to outline a general theory of hope, to explore its structure, forms, goals, reasonableness, and implications, and to trace the implications of such a theory for atheism or theism. What has been written is quite disparate. Some see hope in an individualistic, often existential, way, and some in a social and political way. Hope is proposed by some as essentially atheis...

Bringing Political Participation into the 21st Century argues that political participation has lagged behind general developments since 1989 and proposes remedies for that deficiency. The work consists of five parts: the challenge; the big picture; the grassroots; motivations, doubts and objections; and the conclusion. It also introduces a conceptual framework in graphic form to demonstrate the benefits of the Internet, and how it decreases participation costs. Other themes and case studies include: the case for improving political participation; milestones in political participation to date; regional perspectives, including country studies featuring recent developments in e-participation; participation in municipalities; the role of NGOs; contributions by exceptional individuals; the decline in voter turnout in recent decades and ways to address it; differences in political cultures; differences in participation rates between elections for junior vs. senior levels of government; progress in e-government; and a framework for analysis to provide benchmarks for measuring progress in political participation.

New Makers of Modern Culture is the successor to the classic reference works Makers of Modern Culture and Makers of Nineteenth-Century Culture, published by Routledge in the early 1980s. The set was extremely successful and continues to be used to this day, due to the high quality of the writing, the distinguished contributors, and the cultural sensitivity shown in the selection of those individuals included. New Makers of Modern Culture takes into full account the rise and fall of reputation and influence over the last twenty-five years and the epochal changes that have occurred: the demise of Marxism and the collapse of the Soviet Union; the rise and fall of postmodernism; the eruption of ...

Beyond Theodicy

Beyond Theodicy analyzes the rising tide of objections to explanations and justifications for why God permits evil and suffering in the world. In response to the Holocaust, striking parallels have emerged between major Jewish and Christian thinkers centering on practical faith approaches that offer meaning within suffering. Author Sarah K. Pinnock focuses on Jewish thinkers Martin Buber and Ernst Bloch and Christian thinkers Gabriel Marcel and Johann Baptist Metz to present two diverse rejections of theodicy, one existential, represented by Buber and Marcel, and one political, represented by Bloch and Metz. Pinnock interweaves the disciplines of philosophy of religion, post-Holocaust thought, and liberation theology to formulate a dynamic vision of religious hope and resistance.

The first edition of A Short History of Switzerland (published in May 2018) has sold electronic and print copies in the United States, Brazil, Japan, the UK and the rest of Europe. However, continuing research revealed some omissions that deserved to be rectified. Most chapters have been revised and extended. Published on March 31, 2019 Part 2 now includes seven chapters: "The Helvetians: Living under Occupation" has been replaced with "Pax Romana" and "Medieval Switzerland." Also, "The Transition Period" covers the bumpy road from confederacy to federal republic between 1798 and 1848. In addition I wrote three new chapters on winter sports, the Swiss environmental movement, and transportati...

The 1970s

The decade began with a hangover. The Republican Nixon occupied the White House, ending youthful Americans' dreams of social transformation. After hundreds of thousands had perished, the Nigerian Civil War ended in January 1970 when its army swallowed up little Biafra. In February the prominent logician, philosopher and anti-war activist Bertrand Russell died at the ripe old age of 97. His wit and common sense had been the perfect antidote to the century's right-wing as well as left-wing propaganda. Mankind had been to the moon, but at the cost of several astronauts' lives. In April the survival of the three Apollo 13 astronauts following an oxygen tank explosion captured the world's imagina...

Development of a MATLAB/Simulink Framework for Phasor-Based Power System Simulation and Component Modeling Based on State Machines

A Philosophy of Hope

"Schumacher looks at hope as a virtue, one opposed by vices such as despair and presumption, particularly as they are treated in existentialism and Marxism. He also explores Pieper's treatment of hope in relation to the ideas of death and immorality, and in the philosophy of history. Using the idea of hope to examine such themes as dignity, ethics, the good, and the just, Schumacher provides a valuable, wide-ranging introduction to a shaper of contemporary Christian thought against a richly drawn intellectual background."--BOOK JACKET.
