The Socio-Cognitive Approach to Communication and Pragmatics
The book aims to serve as a theoretical framework for the socio-cognitive approach (SCA) that is an alternative to the two main lines of pragmatics research: linguistic-philosophical pragmatics and sociocultural-interactional pragmatics. SCA broadens the scope of the field with an intent to incorporate not only L1 communication but also intercultural communication, and communication in a second language. The author integrates the pragmatic view of cooperation and the cognitive view of egocentrism and emphasizes that both cooperation and egocentrism are manifested in all phases of communication, albeit to varying extents. SCA places equal importance on the social and cognitive individual factors in pragmatics. The author claims that while (social) cooperation is an intention-directed practice that is governed by relevance, (individual) egocentrism is an attention-oriented trait dominated by salience. The book serves as a theoretical guide for researchers and students who would like to understand how we need to change first language-based theories to make sense of what happens not only in L1 but also in intercultural and multi-lingual interactions.

Thermofluid Dynamics
This book gathers ten thermofluid dynamics problems involving the use of analytical solutions. All these problems have been encountered by the author during his research activity; some of the solutions are his own contributions, while others either are classic literature results or can be derived from them. The physical phenomena involved range from pure hydrodynamics to flow with heat or mass transfer, two-phase flow, and magnetohydrodynamics. The problems discussed are not canonical problems; they are rarely found in textbooks, and often exhibit surprising, or even paradoxical, solutions. The potential readership of the book includes students, teachers and scientists in science and engineering interested in fluid dynamics and heat/mass transfer: to them it may offer food for thought, suggestions for lectures or tutorials and ideas for further original developments.

Irregular Negatives, Implicatures, and Idioms
The author integrates, expands, and deepens his previous publications about irregular (or “metalinguistic”) negations. A total of ten distinct negatives—several previously unclassified—are analyzed. The logically irregular negations deny different implicatures of their root. All are partially non-compositional but completely conventional. The author argues that two of the irregular negative meanings are implicatures. The others are semantically rather than pragmatically ambiguous. Since their ambiguity is neither lexical nor structural, direct irregular negatives satisfy the standard definition of idioms as syntactically complex expressions whose meaning is non-compositional. Unlike stereotypical idioms, idiomatic negatives lack fixed syntactic forms and are highly compositional. The final chapter analyzes other “free form” idioms, including irregular interrogatives and comparatives, self-restricted verb phrases, numerical verb phrases, and transparent propositional attitude and speech act reports.
