Current Trends in the Historiography of Inquisitions
This volume launches the book series of “Inquire – International Centre for Research on Inquisitions” of the University of Bologna, a research network that engages with the history of religious justice from the 13th to the 20th century. This first publication offers twenty chapters that take stock of the current historiography on medieval and early modern Inquisitions (the Spanish, Portuguese and Roman Inquisitions) and their modern continuations. Through the analysis of specific questions related to religious repression in Europe and the Iberian colonial territories extending from the Middle Ages to today, the contributions here examine the history of the perception of tribunals and the most recent historiographical trends. New research perspectives thus emerge on a subject that continues to intrigue those interested in the practices of justice and censorship, the history of religious dissent and the genesis of intolerance in the Western world and beyond.

Seit 500 Jahren reisen Deutsche nach den Kanarischen Inseln. Der Geologe Leopold von Buch kam mit einem englischen Segelschiff, der ehemalige Berliner Polizeipräsident Julius von Minutoli reiste – als preußischer Generalkonsul für Spanien – von Cadiz mit einem spanischem Dampfschiff nach Teneriffa. Ernst Haeckel wurde von dem preußischen Segelschulschiff Niobe mitgenommen, Catharina von Pommer-Esche fuhr von Hamburg mit einem Dampfer der Woermann-Linie nach Gran Canaria. Der Geologe suchte das Geheimnis der Caldera von La Palma zu ergründen, der Politiker suchte nach den Ursachen für den trostlosen Zustand der Bevölkerung, die kranke Pommer-Esche suchte Genesung von ihrer Tuberkulose. Wie die anderen reisten und was sie beschäftigte, ist in diesem Buch zu lesen. Das Buch enthält biografische Skizzen von über 40 Reisenden, die in eingestreuten Zitaten mit ihren Beobachtungen selbst zu Wort kommen. Hinzu gefügt wurden Angaben zu mehr als 250 bibliografischen Quellen. Daraus ist ein Bild des Wandels der Gesellschaft und der Naturbeschreibung auf den kleinen atlantischen Inseln im Laufe von über 150 Jahren entstanden.
