Since the signing of the international conventions prohibiting torture, this extreme form of violence seemed to remain a problem only in individual dictatorships. Discussions over the permissibility of preventive torture or torture to save people's lives and methods practised in the war on terror question this assumption. Since the mid-1990s there has been an increase in the portrayal of torture on television, in films and computer games, and even in its use by positive heroes. At the same time medical and psychological evidence testifies to the serious psychological consequences of torture for the victims. Torture not only threatens individuals but also the fundamental social cohesion of human life. The contributions to this volume discuss various aspects of torture. They range from media law provisions to the visual representation of torture, how torture is dealt with in the context of legal residential status procedures, and how medicine and psychology relate to torture and historical and current legal discourse.
Measures of Spirituality/Religiosity (2018)
The interest in the topic of spirituality as a more or less independent dimension of quality of life is continuously growing, and research questions are beginning to change as the field of religiosity changes, becoming more diverse and pluralistic. Addressing new topics in health research also relies on standardized questionnaires. The number of instruments intended to measure specific aspects of spirituality is growing, and it is particularly difficult to evaluate the new instruments. This Special Issue will focus on some of the established instruments (updating them to different languages and cultures), but will also describe the features and intentions of newly-developed instruments, which may potentially be used in larger studies to develop knowledge relevant to spiritual care and practice. This Special Issue will serve as a resource on the instruments used to study the wide range of organized religiosity, the individual experience of the divine, and an open approach in the search for meaning and purpose in life.

Torture is banned without exception in many national legal systems and by international law. In Germany there exist various legal provisions that grant the victims of torture or other forms of severe maltreatment a permanent right of residence or at least protect them from deportation. There are established standards for medical and psychological expertises on traumatized victims. The German Federal Administrative Court has set minimum requirements for the substantiation of post-traumatic stress disorders in medical certificates. And the implementation of a Common European asylum system is intended by 2012. Theoretically, it seems clear what problems emerge in practice: the fair treatment of torture victims in asylum procedures. The aim of this anthology is to explore the possibilities and limitations of the different specialist areas involved in asylum procedures, to further strengthen interdisciplinary exchange between specialists and to offer new conceptual approaches.

Der Autor Sebastian Lindner zeichnet die 13-jährige Verhandlungsgeschichte vor allem anhand erstmals einsehbarer Regierungsakten aus Ost und West, zeitgenössischer Medienberichte sowie Zeitzeugeninterviews nach. Die Analyse zeigt, dass unterschiedliche politische Standpunkte sowie externe Faktoren lange einen Vertragsabschluss verhinderten. Dennoch entwickelte sich ein teils reger Kulturaustausch, der ab 1986 dann spürbar verstärkt wurde - etwa durch gegenseitige Buchausstellungen - und hier in vielerlei Facetten dargestellt wird.
