En esta obra se recoge de forma extensa la parte española del fondo cartográfico del Instituto Geológico y Minero, que consta de unos 20.000 documentos. Concretamente se presenta una selección de los principales documentos, y se repasa la actividad cartográfica llevada a cabo por el IGME a lo largo de sus más de 150 años de historia. La obra se divide en tres partes. La primera constituye una introducción al libro y al desarrollo de la cartografía geológica, mientras que las otras dos están dedicadas a la exposición de los documentos existentes en la Cartoteca del IGME.
