To cope with the problems of today's world, we need to enter into a dialogue regardless of political, religious and philosophical beliefs - a transversal dialogue as Pope Francis called for in the private audience, he gave to Alexis Tsipras, Walter Baier and Franz Kronreif in September 2014. This conversation resulted in the DIALOP initiative - a transversal dialogue between Socialists and Christians. Since then, a network of universities and NGOs have been exploring paths of what they call a transversal social ethics. Between Postcolonialism and Equal Partnership
French interventionism in African countries often faces accusation of postcolonialism. Although President Hollande announced that France would build equal relations towards African states, he decided to intervene in Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR). Contributing to understandings of France's Africa policy, this thesis compares the legitimization discourse of French military operations in Mali and the CAR. It provides new findings by examining postcolonial legitimization strategies as well as contrasting strategies based on equal partnership through a qualitative content analysis.
Conflict at the Interface
More than two decades after the Northern Ireland peace agreement, conflict still flares between deprived Protestant/Unionist/ Loyalist and Catholic/Nationalist/Republican working-class interface communities, who remain divided by numerous 'peace walls'. In light of Brexit, the Irish border issue and the power-sharing impasse progress in local peacebuilding has stalled. This might even jeopardise the overall peace process. Within this context, this book explores, largely empirically, the nature and causes of conflict at the interface. An attempt is also made to provide an outlook on peace in Northern Ireland and to highlight potential lessons for other conflict-ridden, divided societies.
Peace Report 2017

Intervention as Indirect Rule
One of the largest peace-keeping missions currently being undertaken by the United Nations is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the UN is attempting to deal with the civil wars and other conflicts that have plagued the country since 1996. In Intervention as Indirect Rule, Alex Veit uses a close study of the district of Ituri, a major battlefield and a laboratory for international intervention, to explore the micropolitics of warfare and statebuilding. Combining detailed firsthand empirical data with a historically informed analysis, Veit shows the effect that contemporary humanitarian interventions have on state-society relations. He also pays particular, and much needed, attention to the question of why the very organizations that should be helping with international statebuilding efforts--local authorities and civil society groups--so often instead turn out to be corrupt or hostile. Ultimately Veit argues that international intervention tends inadvertently to replicate--or even amplify--historical structures of political inequality, rather than establishing a liberal form of statehood.

The Work of Avishai Ehrlich
This book is about Avishai Ehrlich, his life’s work in political sociology, his contribution to the field of sociology in Israel and his role as a public intellectual. The chapters include some of his articles, commentaries on his work and his public activism, and personal experiences and memories of Avishai as teacher and friend. The book will appeal to sociologists in general, particularly those whose interests include the Middle East conflict, Arab-Israeli relations and the various socio-political contexts within which the State of Israel evolves. A number of distinguished academics have contributed to this publication; they are also counted among Avishai Ehrlich’s closest friends and associates.
