"Monumentalism: History and national identity in contemporary art" (Proposals for municipal art acquisitions 2010) exhibition is to be staged at the temporarily opened Stedelijk Museum on the Paulus Potterstraat in Amsterdam, which is undergoing renovation. For this edition of the annual Municipal Art Acquisitions the museum invited artists to submit work that reflects upon the notion of national history and identity, makes complex interrelationships manifest, creates connections with other histories and looks at historical canons in distinctive and original ways. The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past
Institutions across the globe are increasingly questioned on how their foundations are rooted in colonialism and how they aim to 'decolonize'. The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past provides an overview of critical scholarly reflections on the history of Dutch slavery and colonization, as well as how this translates into critical cultural practices. It also explores possible futures: What can heritage institutions learn from (international) best practices regarding the 'decolonization' of museums? Facing Forward
Contemporary visual culture is inundated with a kaleidoscope of futuristic utopias and dystopias in which the longing for a seamless interface between the virtual and the real, as well as the desire for release from the constrictions of time and space, are recurrent themes. Based on speculative predictions and creative scientific arguments, a pervasive visual rhetoric of acceleration and progression, as well as damnation and destruction, shapes our sense of the future.
