Lligams recull una miscel·lània d’articles científics que evoquen els àmbits de recerca que Maria Bargalló ha conreat al llarg de la seva dilatada trajectòria acadèmica: gramàtica, lexicografia, ensenyament d’espanyol, lexicologia, historiografia, lingüística contrastiva, lingüística descriptiva. S’acompanyen de tot un seguit de semblances i notes que evidencien l’empremta que ha deixat en les persones que participen en aquest volum. Totes les aportacions li reten un homenatge just per haver dedicat bona part de la seva vida a l’exercici de la docència, a l’estudi, a la recerca i a la gestió, inspirant generacions d’estudiants amb la passió per l’ensenyament, la dedicació incansable, el compromís amb l’excel·lència i la paciència infinita.
In Defence of Democracy
In 1930, Antoni Rovira i Virgili published In Defence of Democracy, a book which is as relevant today as ever, given our current political and social circumstances. It reveals its author to be deeply acquainted with and full of insight into the political theory and philosophy of his time. In coming to the defence of democratic values at a time when autocratic styles of government had a growing appeal, Rovira i Virgili’s intelligence and premonition are impressive. This book will surely appeal to anyone interested in politics and public life.
Bombs over Biscay, Barcelona and Dresden (1937-1945)
Sometimes tragedies that have little to distinguish them from a wide range of similar events and which can make no claim to record numbers of casualties or destructive impact go down in history as fundamental and emblematic. This is the case of two of the airstrikes discussed in this volume: Barcelona and Dresden. Other tragedies, however, are sometimes obscured by circumstances elsewhere. This is the case of the “other Guernicas”: that is to say, the bombings of Otxandio, Durango and Elorrio in Biscay. They are good examples not only of the brutality inherent in all wars and of how methods of combat become increasingly barbaric as conflicts wear on but also of the way in which some circumstances push events to the forefront of history and make them emblematic.
De Lexicografia
Lexicography requires rigour, a broad scope, complexity and diligence. The current interest is for having varied and ideal dictionaries from diverse perspectives and for all types of users. The I International Symposium on Lexicography invited the consideration of lexicographical activity from an open perspective that links and unites languages together, considering its output a real help, since what links all dictionaries is that they are all instruments, and precision ones if possible.
Contemporary Approaches to Romance Linguistics
This collection of twenty articles, selected from the 33rd annual Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages held at Indiana University in 2003, presents current theoretical approaches to a variety of issues in Romance linguistics. Invited speakers Luigi Burzio and Jose Ignacio Hualde contribute papers on the paradigmatics and syntagmatics of Italian verbal inflection and comparative/diachronic Romance intonation, respectively. The other papers, whose authors include both well-known researchers and younger scholars, represent such areas as French syntax (both synchronic and diachronic), second language acquisition (Spanish & English), Spanish intonation, phonology, syntax, and semantics, Italian semantics, Romanian morphology and syntax, Catalan phonology and morphology, and Galician phonology (two papers). The volume is rounded out by three explicitly comparative studies, one on proto-Romance phonology, one on microvariation in Romance syntax, and a third addressing syntactic microvariation among varieties of French and French-based creoles. Frameworks represented include Optimality Theory, Minimalism, and Construction Grammar.
Language for Specific Purposes
