In 1921 Matilde Hidalgo became the first woman physician to graduate from the Universidad Central in Quito, Ecuador. Hidalgo was also the first woman to vote in a national election and the first to hold public office. Author Kim Clark relates the stories of Matilde Hidalgo and other women who successfully challenged newly instituted Ecuadorian state programs in the wake of the Liberal Revolution of 1895. This book forges a new approach to historical and geographical change by asking how gender arrangements and dynamics influence the evolution of institutions and environments. This new theoretical approach is applied via mixed methods and a multi-scale framework to bring together unusually diverse phenomena. Internment Refugee Camps
How did and does the fate of refugees unfold in internment camps? The contributors to this book facilitate an extensive engagement with the organized, state led, and forced placement of refugees in the past and present. They show the parallels and differences between the practices and types of internment in different countries - while considering the specific historical contexts. Moreover, they highlight the nexus of relationships and agencies which constitute the camps in question as transitory spaces. The contributions consist of analyses of local phenomena or case studies as well as comparative engagements from an international and/or historical perspective.

Ethnographic Collaborations in Latin America
This volume examines the importance of establishing egalitarian relationships in fieldwork, and acknowledging the impact these relationships have on scholarly findings and theories. The editors and their contributors investigate how globalization affects this relationship as scholars are increasingly involved in shared networks and are subject to the same socio-economic systems as locals. The editors argue for a processual approach that begins with an analysis of researchers' personal and professional backgrounds that inform the cooperative relationships they establish during fieldwork—often a long term process—in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Brazil.
