Kegawatdaruratan maternal dapat terjadi setiap saat selama proses kehamilan, persalinan merupakan masa nifas. Sebelum Anda melakukan deteksi terhadap kegawatdaruratan maternal, maka anda perlu mengetahui apa saja penyebab kematian ibu. Penyebab kematian ibu sangat kompleks, namun penyebab langsung seperti toksemia gravidarum, perdarahan, dan infeksi harus segera ditangani oleh tenaga kesehatan. Oleh karena penyebab terbanyak kematian ibu preeklamsia/eklamsia maka pada pemeriksaan antenatal nantinya harus lebih seksama dan terencana persalinannya. Dengan asuhan antenatal yang sesuai, mayoritas kasus dapat dideteksi secara dini dan minoritas kasus ditemukan secara tidak sengaja sebagai preeklamsia berat. Skrining bertujuan mengidentifikasi anggota populasi yang tampak sehat yang memiliki risiko signifikan menderita penyakit tertentu. Syarat suatu skrining adalah murah dan mudah dikerjakan. Akan tetapi, skrining hanya dapat menunjukkan risiko terhadap suatu penyakit tertentu dan tidak mengkonfirmasi adanya penyakit.
