Innovative approaches and therapeutic perspectives for early-onset neurodevelopmental disorders: from bench to bedside.

In partnership with the Jacques Monod Conference “Genetics, environment, signaling & synaptic plasticity in developmental brain disorders: from bench to bedside", the Frontiers in Neuroscience Journal announces an article collection that will highlight cutting-edge research presented at the 2022 meeting from Monday 11th Apr - Friday 15th Apr in Roscoff (Brittany). Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs) are a highly heterogeneous group of disorders with a prevalence of 3% of the worldwide population. These disorders include Intellectual Disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, specific learning disorder, motor and language disorder, schizophren...

The Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors

The Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors offers state-of-the-art summaries and reviews of virtually everything known today about metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), including their molecular biology, pharmacology, anatomical distribution, and physiological and pathological roles. Illuminating the overall role played by this crucial class of receptors in brain function, the book also pinpoints those areas in which there is the greatest continuing need for focused research. Because mGluRs have the potential for participating in virtually all known functions of the central nervous system (CNS), the opportunity now exists to develop pharmacological agents that can potentially alter many brain disease processes by selective interaction with precise CNS functions. With its critical and insightful reviews, The Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors will immediately become your essential key to the development of novel treatment strategies for the widest variety of neurological disorders.

Neural and Synaptic Defects in Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of genetically and clinically heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impaired reciprocal social interactions and communication, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviors and interests. Studies in genetics, neurobiology and systems biology are providing insights into the pathogenesis of ASDs. Investigation of neural and synaptic defects in ASDs not only sheds light on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that govern the function of the central nervous system, but may lead to the discovery of potential therapeutic targets for autism and other cognitive disorders. Our Research Topic which constitutes this e-book documents the recent development and ideas in the study of pathogenesis and treatment of ASDs, with an emphasis on syndromic disorders such as fragile X and Rett syndromes. In addition, model systems and methodological approaches with translational relevance to autism are covered herein. We hope that the Research Topic will enhance the global knowledge base in the autism research community and foster new research directions in autism related biology.

Biometrics provide quantitative representations of human features, physiological and behavioral. This book is a compilation of biometric technologies developed by various research groups in Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico. It provides a summary of biometric systems as a whole, explaining the principles behind physiological and behavioral biometrics and exploring different types of commercial and experimental technologies and current and future applications in the fields of security, military, criminology, healthcare education, business, and marketing. Examples of biometric systems using brain signals or electroencephalography (EEG) are given. Mobile and home EEG use in children’s natural ...

Excitatory Amino Acids and the Cerebral Cortex

It has recently become clear that the excitatory amino acids and their receptors are critically linked to normal processes of development and synaptic transmission, and to learning and memory, as well as to identifiable disease processes such as Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and cortical damage due to stroke/ischemia. Moreover, the pharmacological nature and chemical structures of many of the receptors and binding sites for these synaptic mediators and their modulators are becoming known, thereby enabling the cloning of each receptor subtype. Such advances may help immeasurably in the identification of endogenous ligands for the amino acid receptors and the development of pharmaceuticals and other therapeutic interventions in coming years.

Further Understanding of Serotonin 7 Receptors’ Neuro-Psycho-Pharmacology

Within the CNS and in the periphery, serotonin (5-HT) participates in a number of functions including cognition, mood, sleep-wake rhythms, intestinal inflammation. 5-HT receptors can be classified into at least seven classes, designated 5-HT1 to 5-HT7. Since its identification, the 5-HT7 receptor has been the subject of intense research efforts, driven by its presence in functionally-relevant brain regions and in the gut. The availability of selective agonists and antagonists, in combination with genetically-modified mice lacking 5-HT7 receptors, has allowed so far a better understanding about the patho-physiological roles of this receptor. This Topic will review the state-of-the-art from st...

Latest Findings in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities presents reports on a wide range of areas in the field of neurological and intellectual disability, including habitual human quadrupedal locomotion with associated cognitive disabilities, Fragile X syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, and intellectual developmental disability among children in an African setting. Studies are presented from researchers around the world, looking at aspects as wide-ranging as the genetics behind the conditions to new and innovative therapeutic approaches.
