Recent Developments in the Law of the Sea
New developments in the uses of the sea have given rise to new questions in the law of the sea since the beginning of the second millennium, and there are international endeavors to revise certain issues of maritime law. The Seminar, papers of which are collected in this volume, dealt with some examples of these developments. Participants were doctoral candidates of the International Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs and students of the University of Hamburg. Addressed are the internationalization of marine natural resources, the audit system of flag State's obligations, rights of land-locked and geographically disadvantaged States in the EEZ, the reform of the European fisheries policy and finally the Rotterdam Rules which are deemed to alter the carrier's obligations in the law of maritime transport. A report of the Seminar's excursion to several maritime institutions in New York City is also included.
Biokerosene
This book provides a detailed overview of aspects related to the overall provision chain for biokerosene as part of the global civil aviation business. Starting with a review of the current market situation for aviation fuels and airplanes and their demands, it then presents in-depth descriptions of classical and especially new types of non-edible biomass feedstock suitable for biokerosene provision. Subsequent chapters discuss those fuel provision processes that are already available and those still under development based on various biomass feedstock materials, and present e.g. an overview of the current state of the art in the production of a liquid biomass-based fuel fulfilling the specifications for kerosene. Further, given the growing interest of the aviation industry and airlines in biofuels for aviation, the experiences of an air-carrier are presented. In closing, the book provides a market outlook for biokerosene. Addressing a broad range of aspects related to the pros and cons of biokerosene as a renewable fuel for aviation, the book offers a unique resource.

Fisheries Subsidies under International Law
Subsidies to fisheries have been in existence for centuries. However, these remained outside the spotlight of the international community until the turn of this century when the negative effects that fisheries subsidies have on international trade, the environment and sustainable development became increasingly clear. As a result the Doha Round Negotiations set the parameters for an effective fisheries subsidies regime. WTO Members thus embarked in intensive negotiations with the collaboration of various international organizations. These negotiations culminated with publication of the legal text of the Chairman of the Negotiating Group on Rules in 2007 which reflects to a large extent the mandates of the Ministerial Conferences and reconciles the diverse interests of the negotiators. The EU as a major WTO Member and with its own Common Fisheries Policy which has been in effect for a number of years can serve as the basis for comparison and improvement of the proposed regulations.
