This book introduces a range of citizen science approaches to the coastal and marine sciences, introducing a variety of case studies. It goes beyond the narrow definition of citizen science, and also includes the contributions to science provided by the wider tourism industry. Various methods are discussed, including traditional surveys, the use of social media and GPS tracking as sources for data, and citizen science contributions through online platforms and apps, as well as tour operator sighting logs.
Since the first volume of The Biology of Sea Turtles was published in 1997, the field has grown and matured in ways few of the authors would have predicted—particularly in the areas of physiology, behavior, genetics, and health. Volume III presents timely coverage of emerging areas as well as the integration of approaches and information that did not exist even a decade ago. The book assembles the foremost experts in each topic to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on sea turtles available today. New areas covered include in vivo imaging of structure, spatial distributions of marine turtles at sea, epibiosis, imprinting, parasitology, and climatic effects. Life history is e...
Sedimentary habitats cover the vast majority of the ocean floor and constitute the largest ecosystem on Earth. These systems supply fundamental services to human beings, such as food production and nutrient recycling. It is well known that meiofauna are an abundant and ubiquitous component of sediments, even though their biodiversity and importance in marine ecosystem functioning remain to be fully investigated. In this book, the meiofaunal biodiversity trends in marine habitats worldwide are documented, along with the collection of empirical evidence on their role in ecosystem services, such as the production, consumption, and decomposition of organic matter, and energy transfer to higher a...
A comprehensive introduction to the plastics life cycle—the impacts on our lives, our future, and our planet—and the actions we can take. Everywhere we look, we are surrounded by plastics: perhaps you have a book in one hand and your phone—made of various metals, plastics, and glass—in the other, or you are reading this on your polyurethane mattress after having flipped on a plastic light switch. In this Essential Knowledge series volume, Imari Walker-Franklin and Jenna Jambeck provide a deep exploration of the entire life of plastic things—plastics production and use, plastic waste generation and management, the environmental and societal impacts of plastics in our environment, an...

It is the most important ocean in the world – 33% of the global population lives in the area and 50-60% of the world’s maritime trade transits through it. In addition, around 60% of global oil, and 26% of global gas reserves, along...
"With over 500 participants from over 60 countries, the success of the symposium was reflected in the coming together of ideas in research and lessons in conservation from a diverse range of individuals and groups, both at the local and regional/global scale. Over 400 abstracts were received and a total of 376 were presented after a careful review process by the Programme Committee, overseen by Programme Chairs Matthew Godfrey and Brendan Godley and the Programme Coordinator DuBose Griffin. The symposium was held at the Kala Academy in Panaji, Goa's renowned centre for performing arts, situated on the banks of the Mandovi River. A few workshops were also held at the Taj Vivanta Hotel situated across the road from the Kala Academy.
