Agricultural research, extension and education can contribute greatly to enhancing agricultural production in a sustainable way and to reducing poverty in the developing world, but achievements have generally fallen short of expectations in Africa. In recent years, growing economic and demographic pressures - coupled with the entry of new market forces and actors - have created a need and an opportunity for more interactive approaches to development. Understanding the existing innovation processes, recognizing the potential for catalysing them and learning how to support joint innovation by different groups will be the key to success. This book covers new conceptual and methodological develo...

The agricultural sector in sub-Saharan Africa badly needs to find new ways of doing things if agricultural development is to contribute to food security and poverty alleviation. This is not only about introducing new technologies to farmers. It is also, even more importantly, about changes in the way old and new technologies, ideas and initiatives are put into practice - as well as how different actors work (together) to stimulate innovation. This book takes a look at platforms that have been set up in order to trigger such change. However, little is known about how innovation platforms actually operate. This book brings together twelve stories from the field about creating and working with ...

An increasing number of African smallholders are moving from subsistence farming to selling at least part of their output. To shift successfully to a more commercial footing they need a lot more than the production advice traditionally provided by extension services. They need to understand how markets work. They also need advice on postharvest handling, help with business planning and marketing, assistance with organization, information on prices, links to buyers and credit, help with contracts and standards, and many other types of assistance. These agricultural business development services are provided by a mix of private companies, NGOs, cooperatives and government agencies in what is c...

Agricultural Innovation Systems

Managing the ability of agriculture to meet rising global demand and to respond to the changes and opportunities will require good policy, sustained investments, and innovation - not business as usual. Investments in public Research and Development, extension, education, and their links with one another have elicited high returns and pro-poor growth, but these investments alone will not elicit innovation at the pace or on the scale required by the intensifying and proliferating challenges confronting agriculture. Experience indicates that aside from a strong capacity in Research and Development, the ability to innovate is often related to collective action, coordination, the exchange of know...

In 2004, nine country programs involved in PROLINNOVA (Promoting Local Innovation in ecologically-oriented agriculture and natural resource management) considered how local innovation could be enhanced. The PROLINNOVA partners (national NGOs and government institutions of research, extension and education) saw a need for flexible funding mechanisms to support farmer-led participatory research and development (R&D) processes. They developed the concept of locally controlled "Innovation Support Funds" (ISFs) that would allow farmers to invest in their own research, to hire external resource persons to support it, to access external information, and to conduct cross visits. The note explores the ISF concept, and describes how PROLINNOVA partners envisage their operation.

Efficient markets are vital for food security and agricultural development. They give smallholder farmers incentives to generate a surplus that they can sell, and to invest in new production and postharvest management techniques. 0This book describes how the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has been trying to improve markets for staple foods in Africa through its Market Access Programme. It describes 13 projects from eight countries (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) that the programme has supported.
