The Europeanization of Control

The Europeanization of Control

In decisions about migration, asylum, justice, and order, the transfer of sovereignty from the Member States to the European Union has been one of the most surprising task expansions in the European project. This book sheds light on these extraordinarily dynamic institutional developments and the resulting policy outcomes. Comprising both conceptual and empirical contributions, the book asks whether established theoretical schools of thought still hold true or whether the institutional conditions induced by the Lisbon Treaty have led to new modes of interaction and given weight to rival explanations. The Migration Conference 2017 hosted by Harokopio University, Athens from 23 to 26 August. The 5th conference in our series, the 2017 Conference was probably the largest scholarly gathering on migration with a global scope. Human mobility, border management, integration and security, diversity and minorities as well as spatial patterns, identity and economic implications have dominated the public agenda and gave an extra impetus for the study of movers and non-movers over the last decade or so. Throughout the program of the Migration Conference you will find various key thematic areas are covered in about 400 presentations by about 400 colleagues coming from all around the world from Australia to Canada, China to Mexico, South Africa to Finland. We are also proud to bring you opportunities to meet with some of the leading scholars in the field. Our line of keynote speakers include Saskia Sassen, Oded Stark, Giuseppe Sciortino, Neli Esipova, and Yüksel Pazarkaya.

Migration and Refugee Policies in Germany

International migration is one of the most controversial political topics today which demands innovative approaches of global and regional governance. The book provides a fresh theoretical framework to understand European responses to the international migration of people and explains the dynamics of Germany’s migration and refugee policy during the last two decades. Against traditional theories and their inherent focus on the national political sphere, the book highlights supranational and multi-level political processes as increasingly important factors to account for national policy changes. Confronted with the most recent developments of international migration, the study offers students and practitioners the necessary background to participate in today’s debates.

Unravelling Migrants as Transnational Agents of Development

Since the early 2000s, there has been an increased interest in international migration as a central mechanism to advance what is called the development potential of international migrants. The contributions in this book argue that the current enthusiasm about the migration-development nexus should be approached from a perspective that recognizes and critically appraises the emergence of a new agent in development discourse, variably called "migrants," "diaspora," or "transnational community." The essays, which are the result of intensive student research at Bielefeld University, depart from issues raised by the migration-development nexus and ask how life-worlds and institutions are changing in the face of cross-border processes. In this way, the book is also a contribution to the different understandings of development. (Series: Politik, Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft in einer globalisierten Welt - Vol. 11)

Crossing and Controlling Borders

This volume highlights the impact of border controls on migrants’ journeys in two major areas of immigration: the European Union and the United States of America. In order to show the linkages between border control policies and migratory practices, the book combines empirical insights from ethnography with approaches from political science. Describing migrants’ realities reveals that the impact of border control policies goes beyond the actual border area affecting many lives and states.

Regionale Wege in Europa

Broadening the Debate on EU–Africa Relations is designed to expand the scope of our understanding of the multi-layered relationship between the European Union and African political actors in order to shape both the academic and policy level discourse. The focus on chapters highlighting an African perspective offers an opportunity to redress an imbalance in scholarship, and also represents an effort to reinvigorate the EU-Africa discourse. The contributors scrutinise hitherto underexplored areas, from agricultural cooperation to sanctions to scientific collaboration, as new insights linger in the less visible margins of the relationship. Jointly, they push in the same direction, to broaden ...

For some years now, growing scientific warnings have continued to strengthen the belief that an unprecedented global warming is underway, and that only an urgent system-wide transformation can avoid climate disaster. In his June 2, 2022 address to the Stockholm+50 Conference, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres construed “climate emergency” as one of the key drivers of the “triple planetary crisis.” Despite this, the overriding impression left by COP27, held in Sharm el-Sheikh in November 2022, was of a divided institution, floundering and nowhere close to realizing its stated aim of “stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations at a level that would prevent dangerous interferen...
