This is a study of the Korean War of 1950-1953 from the inside--the nuts and bolts of armed conflict. The perspective is American, with the principal focus on the relationships of the people involved: Koreans versus Koreans, Americans and Koreans, Americans and Chinese, and the U.S. and its allies. The lives of ordinary soldiers are examined--U.S. forces, with attention paid to the other side as well. A major development in American ranks was the effective elimination of racial segregation. At home, there were surveys of Americans' opinions about the war. The book examines such important aspects of military operations as supplies, equipment and weapons, tactics and strategy, intelligence, and psychological warfare. Also studied is the vexing matter of prisoners of war--on both sides. Finally, there is an effort to fit Korea into the generalities of American military experience in Asia, from the war with Japan to Vietnam.
The multi-dimensionality of our daily experiences is reduced by the television and internet media to the surface of a flat screen. Thus reality loses more and more of its spatial qualities, even as theoretical physicists develop increasingly sophisticated models to better understand the structures of time and space. As they employ an ever-growing number of dimensions in this endeavor, the mode of our sensual reception continues to become as flat and one-dimensional as the monitors of the computers at which we work. Throughout the history of art, sculpture has been prized as one of the foremost artistic expressions in western culture, one that employs far less illusionism than, for instance, painting. The works included in "Sculptural Sphere" are analyzed based on their spatial parameters. Their dimensions prove useful in defining the sculptural sphere that surrounds our bodies, as well as our reception of our multi-dimensional spatial environment.
For this extensive series of European exhibitions of Mark Mander's work to date, he has arranged his installations around a central space, which, combined with works from 1990 to 2007, enable the presentation of a comprehensive overview of his existing oeuvre.
Het Werkverband Kunst IJ-As (KIJAS), door de gemeente Amsterdam ingesteld om de betekenis en de mogelijkheden van kunst in de openbare ruimte te onderzoeken en projecten te realiseren, heeft met het oog op de stedelijke ontwikkeling van het havengebied in Amsterdam de Werkgroep Kunst Oostelijk Havengebied opgericht. De Werkgroep had als taak kunst in een vroeg stadium te betrekken bij de stedelijke ontwikkeling van het havengebied. Vanaf 1989 tot en met 2001 heeft de Werkgroep zich als mede-opdrachtgever bezig gehouden met beleid, financiering, organisatie en uitvoering. Deze publicatie toont het resultaat.
