Summary: Mario Sorrentis brother Davide was born in Naples, Italy on July 9, 1976. He passed away at the age of twenty on February 4, 1997 i New York City, from complications of his illness and drug abuse. At the age of one, Davide was diagnosed with Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder. At the age of three, Davide began nightly treatments with a chelator drug administered with a 3 X 8 inch infusion pump. The pump came to be known in his family as "the machine." The brothers were very close. As Davide grew and matured, the reality of his illness grew heavier and crueler, yet he was determined to live his life like any other kid. Being stuck with a needle every night was one of the most difficult things for Davide. These photos were taken on Thanksgiving night 1994 during a family visit to Washington D.C. It was late, after everyone was asleep. That's when Mario Sorrenti shot these four rolls o film.
Initially conceived as a personal project on the walls of Sorrentis New York loft, the material in Draw Blood for Proof eventually found its way onto gallery walls as a large-scale installation piece in 2004. Papering the site from floor to ceiling with layers of collected snapshots, contact sheets, prints, polaroids, and ephemera drawn from over 15 years of work, Sorrentis collection was a unique look into the artists diaristic creative process, going beyond ideas of public and private production. Mario Sorrenti is a photographer and director best known for his spreads in the pages of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He has had exhibitions in London (Victoria and Albert Museum), Paris, Monaco and New York (Museum of Modern Art). He has undertaken campaigns and directed commercials for Calvin Klein, and has shot Kate Moss for the Calvin Klein Obsession ads. He has also worked for Lancome, Paco Rabanne, Benetton and Pirelli Calendar 2012.
